How the Spread Arrived in Baton Rouge (Sports Illustrated)

Buddy Breaux watched LSU play Texas from the far reaches of Darrell K Royal Stadium, the tip-top of the upper deck, in the “next county,” he says with a laugh. But no distance, big or small, could keep him from recognizing a truth about what he was seeing below: His LSU Tigers football team looked different. There were rarely snaps under center. There were no fullbacks and sometimes there were even no running backs. There were—gulp—no huddles. There were as many as five receivers on the field. There were crossing routes and verticals. There were deep ins and deep outs. There was, unfathomably, the spread offense. “All of my friends . . . we’re looking at each other pinching ourselves. ‘Is this real?’” says Breaux, 69, a past president of the Tiger Gridiron Club. “A lot of the general fan bases in college football, they have no idea of the frustration the fans had here.” LSU’s 45–38 win over Texas on Sept. 7, in which the Tigers had 573 yards, 28 first downs and five touchdowns—stretches beyond its significance on the surface: a road victory over a top 10–ranked, Big 12 powerhouse. In front of millions on national television, in a sold-out stadium of mostly burnt orange, a program, stuck in the Stone Age offensively, signaled thunderously that it has sprung into the new millennium of offensive football. “People are going ballistic,” says Dan Borne, the longtime public address announcer at Tiger Stadium. “It’s shock and awe when that offense gets the ball.” Even the governor is on board. “The excitement is real, and it is palpable,” says John Bel Edwards.

I am registered independent, as a general rule, I despise all politicians. However, I will say as someone who is close to the situation, LSU suffered under Jindal a hell of lot more than under JBE. Jindal only worried about doing the business of D.C. Think tanks to get his numbers up for the Iowa Caucus, NH and SC primaries.
If you know someone that works at LSU just ask them.

I suggest you read 4 articles, 2 from the local press, 1 from a more Democratic leaning source and one from a more Republican leaning source. All of them document the damage Jindal did to LSU. And I admit, I voted for the him twice. If he ran for Sanitation Collector, he would not get my vote.

What does Jindal being a shitty governor have to do with JBE being a shitty governor? I love this is what the JBE supporters are running with. Well he was better than Jindal so we should vote for him even though he still sucks.

Dude, sorry, but compared to JK, you have zero credibility. I can think of only 2 or 3 other people that post on here that have that level of credibility.

No, truly independent, the last politician I actually can say I voted for is Reagan. I have voted for both Republicans and Democrats (at the local level here in Baton Rouge), but I do not want to affiliate with either party. The Republican party and its neocon wing was very good at starting wars that they would not send their own son to fight. The Iraq war was a joke, this drum beat to start a war with Iran is a joke. To hell with them, If it is a war that you would not believe your own son should fight, then you shouldn't send someone else's son to fight. The Republican party can do to hell just like the Democrats. My vote at the national level is the lesser of 2 evils. I was once a registered Republican, but Bush-Chaney Neocons and their endless wars ended that.
so since you made a statement about being a democrat, as I said, every vote other than Reagan has been a vote against someone.
As for Jindal, his entire platform was to say he had a perfect record for the Heritage foundation in terms of taxes. I am not for excessive tax, but I am for fair taxation for things that benefit the state. Louisiana has the 7th lowest tax burden in the country (sales, property and Income) if you add in Fuel taxes, we are even lower (we have 2nd lowest fuel taxes). So you look at roads in LA, yes I would vote for an increase in GAS tax to fund roads since everybody who drives pays it, if you don't want to pay more taxes, then drive less. It is in essence of Voluntary tax. In 2008 when Gas was $3.5 a gallon, I did notice a change in the driving behavior of anyone in Baton Rouge which gives me empirical evidence that $3.5 gallon a gas did not cause a change of driving behavior of anyone on Baton Rouge. So, you think a 1 cent increase in gas taxes will to fix the damn roads in this city.
So when Jindal balanced the budget on the back of Higher education, without giving the Universities the ability to charge fees without his and legislature approval, he damn near destroyed LSU and public higher education with any reasonable tax changes (even if it was a temporary tax). Of course only in Louisiana is tuition increase thought of as a tax increase. It is voluntary fee, if someone thinks the additional fees you pay at LSU is not worth it, you go to the next tier school, which charge lower fees, etc.
And of course, if your are honest, Jindal in the fall of 2015 put the breaks on Miles getting let go and Jimbo since he was worried about cutting the hell out of LSU, and then having a new coach for $60 million and paying Miles 15 million to go away.
So I am no fan of Jindal and like I said, I voted for that guy twice.

My comment was in response to another poster making it political. JBE did not threaten to cancel football, what he said was that if there was not a budget agreement, LSU would not be able to fund summer school. So without Summer School, which many LSU football players use to get their credits, LSU would in fact have had significant issues with eligibility. That was my point. JBE inherited the budget mess from Jindal. I was just setting the record straight.
