CEH made the right read and the tough block, and a little slice of football history happened...

quote:

Facing third-and-17, Orgeron asked Ensminger through the headsets, “What you think about a four-minute offense?”

“Nope. We’re going to pass the ball and go down there and score,” Ensminger told him.

Orgeron’s reply: “Go ahead.”

For Brady, it was an easy call. “It’s all I really know. I’ve been with Sean Payton for two years, there’s nothing that he’s scared of. We had a good bead on Texas. They’re a pressure football team. In a critical situation, they’re going to want to send the house and knock you back even more, force you into a turnover.”

Ensminger called four vertical routes and kept the running back, Clyde Edwards-Helaire, in the backfield as a sixth pass protector. In a collapsing pocket, Edwards-Helaire made the saving block to provide Burrow with enough time to find receiver Justin Jefferson, who broke a tackle and jaunted 61 yards for the game-securing touchdown. “Last year,” Burrow said, “we’d have pounded the run game.”

Jefferson wasn't running a vertical route though, was he?
Pretty sure it was a long crossing route at the sticks.

Good question. I remember hearing Burrow say that he looked for Jefferson to make the adjustment to the blitz.

Any back who missed that block would be a putz. It's easy as hell to pick up that block. The offensive linemen had tougher jobs. Good job by CEH, just as it was a good job by nine other players...and a great job by Burrow!

IF there is a flaw in all this, under pressure, Joe tends to lean on Jefferson. His 1 "bad" pick this year had him staring down Jefferson.

True to an extent. But the third and 17 shows the benefit to that reliance. Pocket is breaking down, but Joe has confidence that Jefferson will know to break off short and get open on the crossing route. If joe isn’t looking to Jefferson as his safety blanket quickly, he might not have seen Jefferson come open in time

With time, he's throwing everyone open. I'm just worried that - without that time - it's going to be easy for the better defenses to bait him.

Didn't CEH miss a similar block earlier? Tried to go LOW and defender just went over him.

All RBs miss a few blocks. CEH misses damn few.

I hate to nitpick, but according to what was said after the game, the CEO/Slinger "four-minute offense" conversation happened before the beginning of the drive, not when we were already "facing third-and-17." Not a huge deal I guess, but it wasn't an impulsive decision to go for it on that play. Come on, Delly!

Of course he wasn't.

Jefferson was lined up in the right slot and caught the ball on the other side of the left hashmarks, basically between the hashmarks and the numbers.

Chase and Marshall weren't running verticals either. Chase was the lone WR to the left of the formation and he ran a deep out at the sticks. Marshall ran a deep in at the sticks. All 3 were running horizontally at the 1st down markers.

ETA - Delly probably just made up the part about E calling 4 verts.

Well, it happened because CEH missed the block on the 2nd down that led to the sack that set up the 3rd and 17.

But he made up for it on the next play.

Jefferson ran a drag route that he deepened to get behind the LBs like they had been doing all night. either way, it's 6 and win for the Tigers.
