Trail Running Shoes

I went trail running for the first time yesterday and, holy shite, what a blast. I may never run on pavement again.
That said, my road shoes clearly weren't the proper equipment. Too slick and "bouncy" for the woods. Any recommendations for a pair of decent trail shoes?

I just bought a pair of Hoka One One Challenger 5s and they fit and feel perfect after around 100 miles (50% trail, 50% road).
My only complaint is the tread wear. The yellow/green part of the sole in the pic below is shredded. The rest of the tread looks brand new.
Any experts here know what is up with that? (I was carrying a 30lb pack for most of the miles, maybe that extra weight was too much?)
I had a pair of Hoka Torrents on order but may hold off on them now.
Altra is the shoe of choice for many ultra runners and long distance hikers, you may want to check them out. They are zero drop with an extra wife toe box, seem to have a cult following.

I have two pairs depending on distance:
(1) Merrell Trail Glove - preferred
(2) Altra Superior 4 - longer distance or when I want more cushion underfoot

i didn't know we had this many trail runners.
i currently run in Brooks Cascadias (heavier, but cushioned and a rock plate) and asics frequent trails (not that cushioned, but light weight)
the asics are whatever. I like them, but not enough to recommend highly. a good starter shoe for a cheap price. there's also the asics venture which you should be able to get for less than $50 bucks that i used to run in and it's also a good starter shoe.
really like my cascadias though. i notice how much i love the rock plate when i don't have it. most of my crew wear Altras or Brooks.

Merrell Trail glove.
I generally like minimalist shoes anyway, but especially running trails.

I recently purchased a pair of Hoka One One Torrents. I like them so far but only have about 25-30 miles in them.

Merrell Trail Glove
NB Minimus Trail
or if more rocky terrain, Brooks Cascadia

I got some Asics Sonoma-4's at Academy for a reasonable price. Very cushioned.

I’m going to 4th Salomons. Only pair I’ve owned but they’ve been amazing trail running and obstacle course racing.

Just like roads shoes everyone likes different ones for different reasons. Been running in Nike Wildhorse 5. decent rock plate and great toe bumper. solid shoe except if you deal with wet rocky / boulder terrain. also have run in brooks caldera which is modeled after brooks glycerin. good if running 100 miler and need more cushion towards the end but little too soft for general runs for me.
