re: When are we going to stop lunch shaming young kids?

Another thing my wife told me about lunch accounts is before they implemented the “alternative lunch” for kids with negative accounts, they would see some accounts go hundreds of dollars in the red. The largest she remembered seeing was one family who’s two kids ended the school year owing like $600 each.
And that's when the "crippling school lunch debt" story gets run.

My high school football coach bought my school lunch a few times growing up.
We were poor and I hated having to ask my mom for a check to rebuild my lunch balance. The school offered free lunch for low income students but my mom was always too stubborn

School lunch should be free. If we can't feed all of our children, we are a failure as a society.

free or reduced lunch kids have been shamed for 25 years.
This isn’t true, at least at the school where my wife works and our kids attend. When a kid checks out with their lunch, they enter a PIN number. Free & reduced lunch kids have a PIN number just like everyone else. None of the kids nor even the lunchroom worker can tell who is on free or who pays full price.

Cash paid at the end of the line was the way we did it.

Some of y’all have gotten soft. Damn socialists.
I didn't know that "not taking it out on the kids" was a socialist policy.

When I was a kid those who got free lunches just said “free” when they got to the check out. I tried doing this myself thinking I’d save my lunch money for a candy bar from the break counter. Didn’t work though. Got my arse in trouble.

Yep I graduated from a public Louisiana high school in 2012. That’s exactly how it’s works so people don’t get shamed

Our school district has free lunch for all elementary and middle school students.
My oldest kid hasn't eaten a school lunch in 4 years. My youngest gets school lunch about half the time.
When you consider all of the costs involved in charging for lunch, I have to wonder if it would really be that big of a deal to eliminate all of those support costs, and just give a lunch to anyone who wants it.

Public grade schools in La now offer free breakfast, free lunch and free after school snack programs. Where does it all end?

There is a tight control on who actually knows who is on free & reduced lunches. At my wife’s school the only ones who can see this information are the Nutrition Director (my wife) the principal, and I think one other, maybe the school office secretary. None of he lunchroom workers or even teachers know who’s on free or reduced lunches.

I bet the parents paid for their smokes, tats, cell phone and energy drinks.......
so if they don't pay their rent while waiting for rent subsidy does the landlord not kick them out?

That's how it should be, but that requires an investment in technology.

I would have no problem with that.
We are the most giving, hospitable country on Earth. I can't imagine denying a hungry kid a free meal.
Hell, the Pentagon pisses away more on a week's billing on a cost plus contract to a prime, we'll never miss the money.
(Mixing metaphors, but )

Liberals are cool with this
They just want free college but no free lunches for kids

I just checked what it is currently here. Every school in the county has free breakfast and lunch for everybody. It is funded by the USDA.
