Residents are afraid of taxes
The problem is much of the tax revenue is wasted by inefficient and corrupt government, at all levels.

Fly to BR.
Stay Hilton downtown BR.
Shuttle from Past Times or hotel before and after game.
Tailgate as mentioned above.
Have fun.
Fly to Nola and save $100 per flight. Stay at a Hotel at Tanger Outlet mall area Exit, 177 on i-10 between Nola and BR(45 minutes from MSY and 30 from LSU). These rooms will be cheap.
Park north of campus in any decent pay lot. After the game driver further north to Downtown BR(just 2 miles). This will get you away from most of the traffic.
Then Use your GPS to get yall on I-110 South to I-10 East(Towards Nola). Far less traffic and safer if you're buzzin. You'll be back to exit 177 and your Hotel in about 40 minutes and closer to MSY for flight back in the morning.
If you're frisky for drinks after the game there's a New Orleans Original Daquiri Shop right there by Zaxby's at that exit and it will have live music with a good crowd on a Sat night after LSU game. If it's not too late, you also have Mike Andersons Seafood across the street there It's good and not too pricey(compared to Nola).
Mike Anderson was a Former All-American LSU football player himself.

Before each game, a pregame event schedule is posted on LSUsports.net. Be sure to check out what is listed listed (like the band marching down victory hill or Callin Baton Rouge).
Make a donation to TAF and you can enjoy a pep rally in the PMAC. :)

Hi Guys…similar situation …I’m a NC resident and my son has been a huge fan his entire life…I’m planning on giving him and early Christmas present and taking him to the Arkansas game, this being our first trip I have no idea about the do’s and don’ts of game day…we plan on flying into BTR the Friday afternoon of and flying out Sunday morning…some of the questions I have are...some of these have already been answered
Do I need to rent a car or can I Uber it all weekend
Are there preferred areas to stay and other areas not to stay (no offense, I could tell you where not to go in my hometown)
If I rent a car how is parking, how easy is it to catch a shuttle to and from the game?
Should I make sure that we have tickets prior to game or roll the dice on picking some up at the gate
…and any other tips that you may have…
Thanks

There’s a brand new LaQuinta in Lobdell. I’m sure it’s not anything fancy but it lists for $94 a night and it’s really a short trip over the Mississippi River to campus. Just make sure you leave early before the game and hang out on campus after to avoid traffic. If price isn’t a option the Marriott is where most visiting teams stay or stay at the casino.

Flights to NOLA will be better, but you'll need transportation to BR so factor that cost in. It's not a long drive from MSY to LSU, only about an hour-hour fifteen.
You'll want to stay in BR Saturday night at the very least. You can go to NOLA and drive in on Saturday morning if need be, but making it back after a game is a pain in the arse.
I doubt you'll be able to find much in Baton Rouge on AirBnB. As others have mentioned, look downtown and around the college drive area if downtown is too expensive. LaBerge is a decent-ish casino if that's your thing. It's fairly close to campus and they have a shuttle. Probably a good idea to check here before you book just to confirm you aren't setting yourself up for failure.
As for gameday, LSU fans will seem intimidating at first, but they are very friendly. You have to be able to take a little shite and hopefully give a little, and then they'll invite you into the tailgate to share food, laughs, and booze. Tell anybody it's your first time and they'll take care of you.
Walk Ons is walking distance to the stadium and usually gets rowdy before and after games. You won't be totally out of place as a 30 something year old, but stay out of the Tigerland bars. Don't wander north of campus unless you really know where you're going/what you're doing.
Mostly, have fun and

Don't do any of this unless you and your buddies idea of fun is to spend way too much time in a car.

Baton Rouge is 100% a driving town. If you plan on seeing anything other than campus, I'd get the car. You can Uber for sure, but catching a ride every time you want to go somewhere gets old.

Definitely. Baton Rouge is really limited with hotel options. As others have said, downtown gives you the best "scenery" and taste of the city while being close to campus. College drive area is decent and not too far away, although some of the hotels are a bit older. Other than that, just check here before you book.

Parking is a mixed bag. It's easy to get to campus, find a spot, and get to the tailgating/game. It's usually a nightmare to get out. Shuttles are plentiful, but just make sure you know where the pickup points and times are and don't get on the wrong one.

The game will probably be a sellout on paper, but you will 100% be able to buy tickets around the stadium on gameday. Just depends how much your peace of mind is worth.

Don't stay on the outskirts. People suggesting this are dumb. Baton Rouge isn't the best place unless it's LSU game day. Spend the extra money on a hotel close to campus and save on the ridiculous Uber up charges. Or stay at one of the casinos and have fun.

If you are fine with paying $250 or more for a hotel that is mediocre at best then sure. Uber charges are cheap if you go early and hang out around campus after the game.

Absolutely do not do this. Especially if the OP does not have a driver.
BTR is a quick and painless airport. Will be ~$100 more round trip, but you are paying for convenience and it is well worth it.
Stay in downtown. Watermark was mentioned, which would be my go to. Good restaurant and bar in it. The others are just as accommodating.
Take the shuttle to and from downtown to campus. Or Uber/Lyft. Either are reasonable.
Avoid the area between campus and downtown unless you are looking to obtain some new battle scars.
Tailgate all day. Head back to downtown and make use of the bars there after the game. It is by no means New Orleans, but there's enough booze and loose women to make it an interesting time for y'all.

I Uber it all weekend
This is probably your best bet. Considering you don't know the roads and it'll be a nightmare on game day, just use Uber. Just plan on leaving early for the game. The traffic on the interstate gets absolutely nuts on games days and it gets even worse the longer you wait to get to the game.
Get to campus early, not saying at the crack of dawn but if it's a night game, (which I think it will be) I'd be on campus by at least 1, if not sooner. Just walk around, visit tailgates (don't be shy, seriously. Introduce yourself, explain it's your first time and so forth) people will give you food and drink.
Go see Mike, have to do that. Go see the team come down the hill (I know you're in NC, you have much more hills than we do but it's our hill ) and the band comes down approximately 15-20 minutes after the players. Plan on doing that. Who knows if you'll be back to see it. That's a must.

You can find tickets for that game right up to kick off. People will be walking around holding up extra tickets. If you get nervous, walk around with however many fingers up in the air that show how many tix you need.
No disrespect to Arkansas but they were pretty awful last year so I don't think there will be a big demand (aka people asking high prices for tickets). Just beware of the guys riding around on bikes. Sometimes they'll give you bogus tickets.
I'd walk to the north end of the stadium and just look. It sounds crazy but people will literally be holding up tickets they want to sell. Just pay face value for them.
Lucky for you, that should be a night game so you'll get hooked.

Thanks. I called yesterday, but they can't book over a year out. Guess maybe I am jumping the gun a little, but I'll be sure to try again in a few months.

I'm in Charleston, but the group is pretty spread out over SC. Could be flying from Charleston, Columbia, or even Charlotte if the price is worth it.
