Bloomberg - Star Wars Is Struggling to Win Over the Next Generation of Kids

Marvel Entertainment, acquired three years earlier, had rolled out a series of interrelated movies with characters who went on to join up in the blockbuster “Avengers” movie, then Disney’s most successful ever. The films are supposed to combine with TV projects and the theme parks to create a virtuous cycle, where fans get excited for each new iteration and can immerse themselves in the world of their heroes.
There was every reason to believe “Star Wars” would have a similar path, with its endearing droids, otherworldly life-forms and minor characters like Lando Calrissian and Boba Fett who inspired their own cult followings. Instead, some of the franchise’s most dedicated fans have been sniping at the way Disney has handled their favorite characters from the old movies.
And the new trilogy’s heroes, like Rey and Poe Dameron, just haven’t inspired the same fervor among young people, with toy sales falling flataround each new installment. The Disneyland attraction, along with a Star Wars land opening at Disney World in Florida this year, are designed as much for older dudes as they are for tykes, with a Millennium Falcon-themed ride and a cantina where you can debate whether Greedo shot first over vodka cocktails called Bloody Rancors.
Iger has attributed disappointing box-office figures to “Star Wars fatigue,” and he’s pledged to slow down the tempo of releases. But that doesn’t square with the success of Marvel, which reliably churns out a blockbuster every four to six months.

Kids want fun and cool. Not political bullshite. Just make good movies and fun toys and the dollars will flow
ETA: my point is the political stuff is suffocating the story. The kids can’t necessarily discern the politics, but they definitely notice the suffocated story and characters.

Kids don't interpret it as political the way adults have.

I've heard Galaxy's Edge is struggling because they catered everything to THEIR Star Wars movies, shite kids don't care about and most adults hate. The only thing about the place that screams Star Wars is the Falcon.
If they had made it more OT based people would be flocking to it. People want to visit THAT world, not Disney's Star Wars world. Maybe since it's starting to effect their merchandise sales and park attendance to that specific section they'll finally listen

Adults see the political bullshite in the writing.
The kids just wonder what the big fuss is about because the characters suck. They don’t know WHY they suck, just that they aren’t interesting.

Big no duh. Star Wars is just another movie franchise to young kids, it's not special in any way as it was to past generations.
A huge part of that is just cultural. Another huge part is how absolutely terrible the Disney movies have been.
Nobody gives a shite about Rey or Poe or Finn or any of the new characters at all and never will.
A big part of it is also Star Wars fandom has always been overwhelmingly white males and the new movies have done absolutely nothing to appeal to that demo, quite the opposite in fact.

Here's what happened, and it's clear as day for everyone to see, Kathleen Kennedy failed the Star Wars franchise with her SJW bullshite. Instead of using these movies to bring the old trio back together for one last hurrah before passing the torch to a new and younger generation, Kennedy wanted minority characters to take over the new trilogy from the very beginning. Why? Muh diversity!
I've been a Star Wars fan since I first saw the original trilogy around 1994 or so. I fell in love with the characters of Luke, Han, and Leia...just like all those who came before and after me. In the sequel trilogy, I'm pretty sure I wasn't alone in wanting to see Luke, Han, and Leia take a leading role in the first couple of movies before the torch got past toward the end of the trilogy.
Instead, we get three new lead characters who, admittedly, most of us don't really care about. They are good actors and have done well with the material they have been given, but their arcs have been nothing short of shite. And the characters from the OT were shat on from the very beginning. Han went back to being a scoundrel smuggler and we're never given an explanation as to why. Leia became a candy arse unwilling to lose even one pilot when she had no problem sacrificing the lives of her forces for the greater good in the OT. And Luke? What more needs to be said. They completely destroyed that character and there's nothing short of time travel in Episode IX that can save what they did to him.
TL;DR - Kathleen Kennedy is the reason for the failure of Disney's Star Wars venture. Lucas sold the franchise to the wrong freaking person.

It's not just that. Movies don't have to appeal to white audiences for that demographic to care about them. It just cant be overtly political, be shitty or make other groups feel marginalized, which TLJ does.

I genuinely wonder if he regrets it or if he's just laughing at their failure with his four billion.

If Lucas had sold to Warner Brothers, the DCEU and Star Wars would have been in much better places and you could make a case that FOX would still be around and may even be in a better position since they were a rumored buyer for Warner Brothers before they did an about ship and decided to cower to the Mouse.

I think they are failing to attract diehards for that reason, but I think the big reason for it not drawing crowds is that it is Disneyland. Disneyland is very much a locals park. It counts very much on its locals for a majority of its park goers and they just don’t give a shite about Star Wars. They want Disney.
The true test will be Disney World and I think it will do amazing there. Not because it is Star Wars, but because of the loyal following of Keeping up with the Jones’s those parks attract. People go nuts about WDW and they will spend the money to make sure their friends on Facebook see they went to Galaxy’s Edge.

Rian Johnson and Kennedy are still killing the franchise lol

I believe in that but I also believe that most people are waiting until everything opens at DL. Only half of stars wars land is open.
I have two good friends that are Disney agents and they both told me that. Most of the trips they have booked wanted to wait until Jan when all of Star Wars land is open.

If Disney hadn't decided to kill the EU, they would have been better off.
I don't think Disney's lawyers wanted that.
So instead, something original, that opened up the possibility of DIVERSITY for the sake of marketing to all possible niche markets. Especially ones in dense urban centers (NYC,SF,LA).

quote:My son who is 12 used to love Star Wars. Thought Episode 7 was great. now, he couldn't care less about it. Why? Because Episode 8 was stupid. No other reason. The political stuff is not the problem. Marvel injects some political stuff here and there. Nobody cares. Why? Because the movies are good. One could argue that ep 8 constructed its entire plot on a political statement. thats why it sucked. whatever. I say, make good movies and all is cured.

Rose was one of the most atrocious and out of place characters in a movie I can remember. She wasnt inspiring and she was a vessel to get some stupid message across. Kids do pick up on things like that.
I remember being bored as frick in certain movies when I was a kid. And they were targeting my demographic too.
