A belief exists amongst Pelicans staffers that Demps’ biggest failure came by simply sticking to status quo. The franchise indeed spent years palled as the Saints’ ugly step brother. Yet when Benson assumed control in 2017, she did so willing to invest deeper into basketball. Some suggest Demps merely failed to seek greater financial commitment from the new principal owner. “We could have been more aggressive. We could have done things. We could have asked for things,” Gentry says. “We didn’t.” Griffin made those requests while interviewing for his post. Benson and team president Dennis Lauscha responded with a proverbial blank check, if it will one day bring a championship within reach of New Orleans. “I was just, immediately—” Griffin pauses, slapping the back of his right hand into his left palm for emphasis. “I gotta be there.”

Noise around a superteam is deafening. It can cause combustible conditions. “The reason is LeBron is getting all the credit and none of the blame. And that’s not fun for people,” Griffin says. “They don’t like being part of that world.”

Instead of chasing ping pong balls, they expect to battle despite the West’s stingy field. Griffin warns New Orleans will play buyer at the trade deadline if the playoffs are within his grasp. “People are gonna be like, ‘What the f--- are they doing?’” he says. “We’re trying to win basketball games!” He knows vying for victory most often ends in defeat. But teams that overcome losing together—like Griffin’s Suns, unlike Griffin’s Cavs—grow together.

We felt like the draft was really deep on caliber of human,” Griffin adds. New Orleans eagerly scooped Nickeil Alexander-Walker at No. 17, some members of its scouting department having ranked him as high as fourth on their boards.
Interesting.
More i read about Griffin and his vision for the future of this franchise, the more excited i get.

That article was absolutely fantastic and DG is an absolutely amazing human being.

It's a good read. Even if it doesn't work out it feels like the team is operating the right way and doing everything it can to maximize it's long term success. Contrast that with the Young Veterans approach which felt like employing a Win Now strategy about 2-3 years too early.
Even though Griffin seems to be thinking Win Now in some ways, just having expendable assets makes it feel different. Especially after seeing Boston never pull the trigger with it's war chest.

I'm really hoping what David Griffin is doing and the Zion effect translates into asses in the seats, but the team looks pretty good on paper.
I firmly believe we'll be in the playoff hunt this year for the 6-8 seeds. Favors trade and Reddick signing were absolutely huge.

Agreed, really good article.

The fact that we are the new Celtics, with the promising young core and tons of draft assets, shows me we really can't lose.

The article mentions we plan on developing NAW as a point guard(his preference) despite rostering Lonzo. Now I may be one of the few that really really likes Balls’ game and potential, but I find it hard to see both of them on the team together in the long term if NAW develops like we hope he does. Maybe NAW will be willing to play a combo style 2 guard at that point.

I like Lonzo's potential too. Both Lonzo and NAW fit longterm. I think NAW's role will be backup PG, but gets plenty minutes, like Jordan Clarkson, Lou Williams, or Schroder. Ball and NAW both have good size, they can play together in certain lineups. Neither player will stunt the other players development.

I mean I think I just want to keep an open mind and not play favorites right now.
They both might fit, they both might not. One may fit and not the other.
I think one of the differentiating factors is that unlike in the Demps era you arent locked into either, as both look to retain positive value and should be easily moveable if fit or development curve becomes an issue. Since they aren't players you are paying top of the market value for on non-rookie deals. It's a good place to be and I'm just excited to see it all play out.

Unless you do what the Celtics did.

I’m guessing we won’t trade for Kyrie.

David Griffin is the type that strikes me as a guy with a playoff push trade deadline shortlist already
Wonder who he is eyeballing if we are close?

Beal seems like a no-brainer.
He drops off the list if he signs that extension with Washington, though, because the math becomes an issue.
