Why were horror movies in the 80s universally so enjoyable

I honestly can’t thinknof any 80s horror movies that I have disliked. Sure, some of them had major deficiencies, but they’re so easy to get past.
I just saw some random 80s horror movie. Night of the Demons. Never heard of it before. But like 6 minutes in, it’s already oddly captivating and I don’t know why. All I can think is that those movies were designed with a sense of fun. Horror shouldn’t have to be a slog (I feel like a lot of modern horror is).
What do you think?

Practical effects. They're just more organic than CGI. Use of other elements (musical score,etc) to build tension instead relying on just jump scares and gore.

Because they were meant to be a fun time in a theater. These days most horror movies are just trying to be clever.

Amazon priming it? 
I watched all three sleepaway camps hungover a couple of sundays ago. Hilarious and a big WTF in the first one. Also the acting is the worst I’ve ever seen.

y'all have some real recency bias
the 80s were the king decade of gore and jump scares. they basically invented the jump scare dynamic. the original Halloween came out in 78 and all the slasher films tried to mimic its tension and they devolved into jump scares. then with Friday the 13th (and Tom Savini the boss) plus the Italian gore fests of Argento and Fulci, you had everyone trying to out-gore each other in America

For horror films they "wear their heart on their sleeves." That mixed with a less jaded culture, and it was easy to lose yourself and just go with the situation at hand.
They had no goals except to scare you, they weren't fighting for attention, and they were just trying to have fun. When people create things because they WANT to create them, and aren't held back, that's the kind of stuff you get it.

You like what you grew up with/Movie effects made a drastic jump for their time/Plot lines weren’t constantly rehashed as much as they are in 2010s horrror/ Politics were mostly kept out of entertainment, specifically horror and comedy films.

They kept it simple. Blood and boobs is half the battle right there. Add in some cool practical effects and some funny one liners and you've got all you need for success.

I still enjoy Silver Bullet, American Werewolf in London, Lost Boys, Fright Night, Near Dark, and Shining, etc...
I enjoyed the humor injected storyline aspect as well as the horror piece.

you didn't even include Hellraiser, the Evil Dead/2, the Howling, Possession, Henry, etc.
there is probably better apex horror in the 80s than the 90s (Which was particularly bad), but there was a lot of shite, and a lot of that shite was exactly what the poster said they didn't have (jump scares and gore)

I watched a horror movie from 1981 last night called "Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker". It was bad yet so enjoyable. Had a young Bill Paxton in it. It was about an Aunt's obsession with her teenage newphew that lived with her. The title of the movie had nothing to do with anything that happened in the movie but it was bonkers.

Nothing was better than going to browse the horror aisle at the local movie store in the 80s.
The VHS covers were classic. Grab a movie or two for the weekend and a 2 liter of Mountain Dew and you were set
