My dog of 15 years passed away recently. Very sad day in the perch house. We’re not getting another dog for at least 6 months. I was looking at dog breeds online. I’d like a large dog to protect the family while I’m working (I work a lot of nights). A mastiff looks like a good fit. It’s large, friendly ( if raised right and socialized), not super energetic. Looks like a good family and house/yard dog.

Does anyone have any insight into this or any other thoughts?

Mastif would be good although I am very partial to Boxers. They have a goofy arse personality and are very protective of their owners.

Sorry about your pupper

Good luck with the slobber. It's pretty irritating. Same with Great Danes.

that's a lot of dog, I've seen one get to over 200 lbs., logistically would be a handful and they seem to get pretty slovenly and lethargic pretty quickly

Looks like the compost pile in the corner of your backyard it's about to get a big increase in materials. I'd buy a snow shovel.

I wouldn't want to pay the food bill on that hoss. It'd be like having 2 teenage boys with friends over every night for supper.

Fox8 carried a story this morning about a boxer that got loose on an overpass around Tampa, ran around in the road and jumped over the overpass rail. The drop on the other side was nearly 20 feet.

Dog has a couple of scrapes on his snout and above an eye. No serious injuries.

I can just about guarantee you won't get this out of a Mastiff. Probably not much more than half of that.

My little brother has one, can also attest to the slobber, ungainliness, and they start stinking quickly. My brother's has a skin condition that contributes to the smell. Not sure if the skin condition is common among the breed or not. Good dog with a good disposition though.

OMG I just watched that video and it made my morning that he's okay. I lost my Boxer girl 2 years ago and have been putting off getting a new one.

You mentioned non-energetic, while this breed can lay around they do need exercise. They are great watchdog and very protective. The ridge also scares people because they think their hackles are up even why they just want to lick them to death.

Rhodesian Ridgeback

They are also useful if you need to bay any lions.

Pit/Lab mix - loving, discipline, protective. Very easy to train, affectionate, energetic and with plenty of calmness inside. Really happy and beautiful dogs.

Most brainwashed media influenced and driven closer minded people here will paint them as the media has fed them to do so, as all vicious killers.
They all are not. No other dog shows you more love when the love and attention is returned.

Other than that I like the Mastiff. Another great dog, friendly and protective when properly trained and shown affection. Good luck

My cousin had one until he impaled himself on a fence trying to jump it. I don’t know if this is true of all of them but this one couldn’t go down stairs by itself. The head and chest were so big that as it was starting to go down it would start to topple which would scare the dog and it would lie down and whine. Then they’re stuck picking this beast up to go downstairs and since there house is elevated that meant 12’ or so of stairs.

It also liked to lean on you. He was super friendly but when it leaned on you, you knew it. It knocked kids over.

You want a dog that will guard the house, then look at a Husky. The typical people you'd be trying to protect your house from sees a wolf and wants no part of it. Similar with German Shepards. problem is they both shed like crazy and are extremely active puppies that can destroy your house.

Buddy has a 6 month old Husky and it looks like a grown wolf already. The thing is nuts and is tearing up his home.

They take grown man sized shits. You can’t just let those degrade in the yard. You have to pick them up

I've had 3 and slober was not an issue. The area around their water bowl is another story. They uptake a lot of water but don't hold the entire volume in!

Great pups, but they eat A LOT and don't live very long.

What about a Rottweiler? They are gentle giants, very loving, great with kids, but will protect their family to the end.

Their "violent" reputation is bullshite, they are great pups.
