While I know dogs can enjoy the A/C in the South, I assume you know one of the breeding objectives was a dog that could keep up with a horse all day (up to 30-35 miles) in the brutal South African heat.

BTW I love threads like this one has become because it is so cool to see how different people bond with different breeds and we all think they are the greatest ever.

I am a Ridgeback and Basset guy forever, while distinctly different they each have traits I love.

Another LARGE dog to add that hasn't been mentioned is the Dogo Argentino.

Agreed! I've hunted with dogs my whole life so working dogs, especially hog dogs and hounds, have a very special place with me.

The dogo is great, but nowhere near what it used to be in terms of quality working dogs. They can still be found but over breeding has done a lot of damage.

Do you live in the South? Personally I would never get a dog they size down here due to the hot and humid weather. They have breathing issues.

Love all the dog "experts" in this thread trying to minimize violent breeds. Insurance actuaries don't just make up data for the hell of it.

Mastiffs are giant teddy bears. Emphasis on GIANT. They have a deep, loud bark that will scare the pants off any intruder. My friend has a mastiff. He loves hugs. He will jump up and wrap his paws around your neck and press his body against your’s. It’s very adorable, but he’ll knock you down if you’re not ready.

We love our Doberman.

He patrols the house at night every few hours-checking on us and each kid in their rooms. If someone leaves their door shut he will bark and whine til they open it. He peeks his head in and then continues his rounds.

He’s goofy as hell but NEVER lets his guard down. Always on the look out. I have never had such a loyal, loving, protective dog.

Boxers are prone to cancer and die fairly young. Great dogs but don’t expect more than 10 years as that is not the norm. Not saying it can’t or doesn’t happen that they live longer but statistics/history say otherwise.

Yeah, I know multiple people who have had them and gave up after too many bad health experiences. One lady I know spent over 35k over 3 years and went to a French Bulldog after, just crushed her going through that. I am a big Dobe fan, wife and I have had 3 rescues, 2-black and tan, and a blue, and her family had 2 reds growning up. One of ours made it just over 12 years, the others barely made 9 years, it is a bitch losing great dogs like that too early. Currently have an 11-yr old Pointer/Weimeraner/Staffie mix that is super sweet and a 37 lb Whippet/English Bulldog/Staffie, the little one is hell on wheels.

PS - the only 2 Mastiffs I have been around were at scent work trials, they were both super solid and surprisingly were quite good with their noses. They were more like 110-120 lbs and their handlers kept them lean, probably 4 - 6 years old.
