Ridgebacks will attack other dogs, so you've got to be careful with those.

They are naturally prone to hunting animals as big or bigger than it. There is one at our dog park that the owner now keeps on a leash.

Great dog with adults and other calm dogs though. And absolutely gorgeous.

Rhodesian Ridgeback

The wife and I almost got one several years back when we were dog shopping. Amazing dogs. I really wanted one but couldn't find a Male anywhere close to us so we ended up going a different route.

I've read they are amazing protection dogs. They used to use them to hunt lions.

Still use them to hunt large mammals like wild dogs and hyenas. They are absolute beasts.

Was going to post this as well.

Expensive pups, but they are gorgeous, sweet, and very protective.

Our next dog is definitely going to be a Rottie.

My friends have 2 of them and 3 little kids and the dogs treat the kids as their own. Its awesome.

They are goofy, loving animals until someone threatens their family.

Check the breeder carefully. I was around a Rottweiler years ago who had a bad temperament. Came from an iffy breeder.

White trash people also love that they look scary and raise them to be assholes or "junk yard dogs". That is how they got their reputation. In reality, I could raise a golden retriever to be an a-hole as well, but they don't look as scary.

I'm sure some breeders have bred that intentionally too. Raise assholes, breed with other assholes, create new assholes.

we have one italian mastiff (cane corse) who just turned 1. we love her so much and she has been so great we just bought our second (a male) and pick him up next month once he reaches 8 weeks. Both are Blue. We bought both from Mac Cane Corso outside of Atlanta. i can't say enough good things about the breed and our breeder based on our experience. he is on the gram if you want check out his new litter and his sires and dames.

I have had 3 of them over the past 12 years and have foster a few others. They are great dogs esp. with kids. I have 2 kids that have grown up with them and the dogs are so protective and careful with them. For the size of the dog they make themselves relatively small. They do very protective when I am not home and its just the wife and kids.

Gorgeous dogs. How much were they from that breeder? I've seen some super high prices on them.

Derek Jeter's (Kane) is an awesome dog. That's how I got turned on to the breed.

He wrote about Kane in The Players' Tribune

The Dogs 101 episode on Ridgebacks calls them the Navy Seals of dogs.

Dogs 101 youtube

While there is a lot of criteria for "most athletic" Ridgebacks are kinda a crossfitter. Fast enough for lure coursing but have the stamina of 5 Greyhounds. An odd hybrid of scent and sighthound.

Someone mentioned them being pet aggressive and I have heard of that but none of mine showed any tendencies with other dogs but they were socialized with lots of dogs when they were pups.

Like everything in life, everyone has their favorite dogs.

Somebody brought this dog to me when she was 6 weeks old.

I never would have suggested them bringing a pit/lab mix, but I love the damn mutt.

She doesn’t crave much affection, but indoor fetch and tug-of-war usually consume 2 hours a day.

Dog loves to chase and retrieve shite.

That was me and I believe it is manageable, which you seemed to do successfully.

The guy at our dog park basically said if a dog bothers his dog then runs away, the instinct to chase that dog down takes over.

His dog hasn't hurt other animals, but he said he's not taking any chances. Great dog with humans though. I always seem to hang out with it at the park.

Also...another dog that blows my mind at our dog park is the Irish Wolf Hound. It literally was bred to hunt wolves and did so successfully.

It is incredibly gentle, but when other dogs chase balls, it chases the dogs (in a playful way). It looks like a goddamn horse galloping.

They have very coarse coats though. Kind of nasty feeling to pet them.

They slobber but are generally great pets. There are several Mastiff rescue organizations. Check one out and save a life.

Link is to a good rescue organization with links to state sights.
