We have some friends who are trying to get a group of couples together for a Carnival cruise next summer. They want to do a 7 day on the Carnival Glory. The price is about $800-850 with a couple of ports in the Caribbean and one in Mexico.

I know the OT talks about how trashy these cruises are, and I have heard IRL that Carnival is bad, but is that a lot of BS or true?

For $1000/person, there are a ton of other vacations I would rather take, but don't want to be too much of a buzzkill.

I’ve taken several cruises on multiple lines. Carnival is the least luxurious but it’s a vacation and as long as you aren’t an uppity, stuck up type will be just fine

Like everyone else says, I'm sure they are the lowest end of the lines. If you are going with a group and want to party and have fun, I'm sure it will work out.

The worst are the 4 or 5 night cruises out of Nola or Mobil. That will be the worst boats and the trashiest crowds.

7 nights are better. Probably a better boat can be found in Galveston and def. better out of Florida, Seattle, etc.

Then don't do it lol.

I wouldn't do a 7 day personally. I love my friends, but after like 3-4 days together I'd be ready for a break. a 7 dayer with friends could get to be a loooong trip especially on a cruise ship.

But the answer is you simply have to enjoy it for what it is.

If you don't go into it expecting the Ritz-Carlton, it will be fine! The food is decent, the drinks are fantastic and there usually is always something going on.

I've been on quite a few (all on different Carnival ships) and I had a great time, every time.

For how relatively cheap it is, and the different places you get to go to, it's a bargain, IMO.

If it's a large ship, there isn't a requirement that people do everything together all of the time. Separate dinners, excursions, night shows, a few days on the cruise would probably be a good idea.

While the OT answers about Carnival are extreme, they aren’t necessarily incorrect.

It’s.....really bad.

It's like being on a floating Walmart. That type of mix of people.

It's not the amenities or destinations that make it unbearable. It's just a really, really trashy group of people. I won't go for that reason alone. It's literally like rounding up the 3 PM thursday crew at walmart and throwing them on a floating petri dish

Cruises with a group are much better than cruises as a couple. We normally send out people every morning to get a clump of chairs near the pool and people can come and go as they desire.

It isn't great but it isn't horrible either.

I've been on 2 cruises, and that was one too many, but I can't say I had a horrible time on either. They're just not my thing. You'll probably have a great time with a group of friends. Vacations are a lot of what you make of them. There will be trashy people on the cruise, but they're pretty easy to ignore.

Never been on a Carnival one though, so can't comment on its quality.

Yeah that's the thing, I have heard/seen/read great things about Royal Caribbean and Norwegian, and nothing but bad about Carnival except from people who I don't want to spend a week on a boat with.

I guess a big pro would be the people watching.

Here's how I think about Carnival: would you spend a week on the beach at Grand Isle or Biloxi, hanging out with whoever showed up? If the answer is yes....then you might like a Carnival cruise. Some uppity folks can hang with the masses & enjoy it. Others get freaked out by close contact with ordinary people. You decide which one you are.

For me, it's not the clientele that's the big turn off. It's the mediocre food.

My wife(no pics) and I have been on two Carnival cruises one out of NO(5 days) and the other out of Galveston (7 days.) We enjoyed the one out of Galveston more as it seems the NO crowd had way more culcha than we do.

Food wasn't bad on either boat, if you expect 5 star meals then you probably won't be a fan. We didn't do a lot of buffet more burgers and things of that nature.

Entertainment was good, and the comedians were funny. We didn't go into the casino, but we heard of a few people winning some money.

The rooms are kinda small and not the most comfortable, but hey you're on a cruise so you probably aren't going to be doing much in the room other than sleeping.

I will say though that there are some friends that I wouldn't want to spend a week with, you may need a place to hide for awhile LOL!

I did the Thursday to Monday one out of NOLA once. For a mindless trip of not having to worry about food or drinks, having breakfast brought to your room and just showing up to stuff, it was good. I couldn't do any longer than that short trip.

I would say it was about 3.6 roentgen not great, not terrible.

It's true, but some people still enjoy them. For $1000/person you could probably do an all inclusive, which IMO is a step up from a cruise.

Get ready for a bunch of African-American family reunion tee-shirts.

I've only been on 1 when we took our kids when they were young. It's kind of trashy, but you can still have a good time. As long as you don't go in with high expectations and are looking to have fun, you'll be fine.

That's my thinking. I would rather do 4-5 days at a better beach somewhere in Mexico or the Caribbean.

We've done one on Carnival, one on Norwegian and four or five on Royal Caribbean. Carnival was are least favorite for a number of reasons, one of which is the clientele is a little less classy than the people you find on other cruise lines. For the money, we prefer Royal.
