Go you’ll have a great time. Sounds like y’all are bringing the party with you. The ship is a great vessel to facilitate the fun. It’s all about the attitude.

If you can't have a pretty good time on a 7 day cruise, it's on you. Ignore those around you, party like a rock star

I’ve been on 7 carnival cruises for one reason or another.
Your departure port makes a big difference. Leave out of Ft. laurderdale, Miami or port Canaveral instead of New Orleans. The clientele is totally different and the ships are newer.
Carnival horizon is the newest ship and leaves out of Miami. If you’re thinking leaving from Nola for convenience sake, the culcha thinks the same thing.
Don’t go on any cruise that goes to progreso, Mexico.

Carnival is not that bad at the end of the day. There is something for everyone to do. It certainly is not high class, but it is as fun as you want it to be.

Wife and I are going on a 7 day Carnival (our 3rd with them) in Sept out of NOLA. The prices go down considerably after Labor Day. But, we have to worry about weather in the gulf. Booked a suite for less that $3k. The 7 day trips tend to automatically weed out the less than desirable and hardly any kids. Just a bunch of old farts and newlyweds.

Carnival cruises are the cheapest for a reason. Actually, several reasons.

It's true, but some people still enjoy them. For $1000/person you could probably do an all inclusive, which IMO is a step up from a cruise.
I'd much rather go to Club Med. Punta Cana is beautiful. 5 days for around $700 now.

The worst are the 4 or 5 night cruises out of Nola or Mobil. That will be the worst boats and the trashiest crowds.

I’m leaving in August on a five day Carnival cruise out of Nola to Cozumel and Progresso!

Or, if you do, don’t bother getting off the boat in Progresso.

There’s a reason why it’s so cheap

Most people can't afford Carnival 7 day cruises. The lower rungs are the 4-5 day trips. I've got a friend who's a baller and does one every year, and has a blast. If you can't have fun on a cruise, the issue isn't other people.

I have done 3. Believe it or not, you will have as good of a time as you allow yourself to have. Is the food amazing? No. But it is decent and there are a couple of things that are outstanding. Are you going to be surrounded by people in tuxedos? No. But if you can bring yourself to enjoy people watching, you can see some amazing things. Are there tons of gorgeous people wearing thongs and speedos for you to look at? No. But there will be one or two and when you do see them, they will be like a rose in a field of thorns.
If you enjoy gambling, gamble. If you enjoy drinking, drink. If you enjoy eating, eat. If you enjoy sleeping on a chair by the pool, sleep. If you want to read on your balcony in peace, read. If you can’t entertain yourself or find rest on a cruise then you are the problem.
It will not be the end all be all vacation. I would much rather spend a week in NYC seeing shows every night and eating New York pizza. That being said, for the money, it is a good time.
Tips:
1. Get a balcony. You will not find any peace on the boat except on a private balcony.
2. Don’t be afraid to people watch. That was one of my favorite things to do.
3. If you enjoy reading, bring a couple of books. There is all the reading time in the world.
4. Skip the shows at night. They are corny. Hit the karaoke, piano bars, and old fashioned pubs with live entertainment. That is where the nightlife is fun.
5. Don’t overeat. It is easy to do it. I always tried to get one meal a day that was fresh fruit or salad. You will be impressed at the fresh fruit.
Do it at least once.
