Someone making minimum wage can go buy a half acre lot for $20k and put a $10k camper on it for bout $350 per month.

This would allow them to save the extra money from rent while they are building equity on the property. Paying rent does not help them.

What happened to people having more than one job if the one job they had couldn’t provide them what they needed? Now everyone just wants their employees to give them more money.

A minimum wage job is not meant to sustain the life of a functioning adult.

It’s for high school kids to gain experience.

If you are into adulthood and working minimum wage, you made a wrong turn somewhere.

This is one of those ideas that make perfect sense at first blush however the logic falls apart with just a few seconds of thinking.

There are a significant number of adults working for at or close to minimum wage.

If one were to be able to wave their magic wand and make all of them qualified for jobs that pay significantly over the minimum wage then there would have to be an equal number of these jobs currently unfilled. This is rarely ever the case and thus they would still be stuck where they are.

The number of menial/unskilled jobs that pay minimum wage far outnumber the amount of high school kids to staf them. There is a big chunk of the work day when kids are in school a significant portion of the year and those jobs still need workers.

I am not making an argument for or against raising the minimum way, just pointing out that is a logically flawed talking point. Until robots displace these jobs there will still have to be a significant number of them filled by adults.

My 16 year old is 3 weeks into working a first job and is making $8.25/hr.

That’s $1 above min wage with zero experience.

In my 20s, I rented a 3-BR apartment in midcity NOLA for $350/month cash. I was there for over 7 years and there were no rent increases. If I went to a big apartment complex where everything was done above board, there's no way I would have found a deal like that. My landlord did not want to pay taxes, and I wanted a cheap apartment. Problems solved for both of us.

Well why do so many plants that operate 24 hours a day pay slightly above minimum?

That’s not true. I’ve had minimum wage jobs while in college the last 4 years and I’ve been able to afford some nice apartments. Of course it all depends on where you live also. I’m in school in Monroe where the cost of living is cheaper meanwhile the cost of living is more expensive in places like Baton Rouge or New Orleans

Wrong. Less than 3% of adults make minimum wage

quote:

Only 3 percent of all workers age 25 and over earn the minimum wage. Only 2 percent of full-time workers earn the minimum wage. 66 percent of all adult workers earning the minimum wage have a high school education or less. 62 percent of minimum wage earners under 25 are currently enrolled in school

Its a very temporary wage that affects very few people over the age of 25. 6 months to a year at any job, full time, and you're no longer making minimum wage...

Most adults who make minimum wage do so because they can't keep a job or refuse to keep a job for longer than a few weeks or months.

Let’s double the minimum wage so more people can afford an apartment. Then watch as the supply of apartments plummets and rents rise. Sounds like we’ll need to implement common sense rent control at the same time.

It’s just common sense.

If you pay child support, bump that number up to $35 an hour

Maybe I’m off base, but are there really jobs that pay minimum wage in perpetuity?

My belief is that if you do a good job, you don’t make minimum wage for very long.

It's not a difficult problem to solve if they can't handle a university.

Go to trade school.
Learn trade.
Graduate.
Get job starting out well above minimum wage.

Since the socialist love them some Canada, I propose we adopt the same minimum wage they have.
