In business, the better the salary, generally the the better people come in for employment.

However we have issues.

- socialist teachings
- lack of results
- lack of accountability
- and government ran and that equals waste and lack of production

Schools were never intended to be a teacher only thing. Schools were also intended to have parents play just as big of a role as the teachers. When parents give no fricks, the kids won't either. That's the problem with inner city, government run schools

You are really good at complaining, but are you really good at solutions? You know, problem solving skills?

Y’all just got fricking raises all over the country. STFU unless your students are blowing it out on ACT & SAT scores. Teaching should be merit based.

When a teaching degree becomes a fall back for people who can't get any other type of degree, we have a problem.

I have an acquaintance, that is business-minded. She is very skilled at marketing and would be a good salesperson. When she went into education, instead of marketing or business, I asked, WHY?! She said she couldn't do the math.

She teaches kids math now.....

That’s the fault of teachers. They demand to be paid based on education and years of service, not performance. Teachers trade pay for job security.

The problem isn’t that teachers in general are underpaid, it’s that there isn’t enough differentiation in pay between teachers. Crappy 2nd grade teachers in easy subjects are paid the same as calc teachers. Hence why there’s a shortage of calc teachers and a glut of elementary teachers.

Teachers unions and politics prevent the free market from setting the right wage for teachers.

Then you are a fool

A teaching degree is one of, if not the easiest degrees one can obtain in college.

Teachers make a very competitive wage and have an awesome benefits package that few careers can match.

Think on this for a second.
What new information is required to teach K-12 in any discipline.
English hasn't changed in 400+ years
Math all the way through Calculus hasn't changed in 400 years.
Science that would be taught in K-12 hasn't changed in 80 years.
History taught in K-12 hasn't changed in 50+ years.

All of those subjects are taught at basic levels.

Teachers in Missouri aren’t generally underpaid.

A teacher in the Rockwood school district (suburban St. Louis) with a Master’s degree will be making almost $80k at 20 years. They can then retire with a larger take home pay than they make while employed.

Everyone cries about lack of accountability and then cries about teaching to the test.

Supply and Demand.

Greater Supply drives down wages.

If getting into the field were tougher, the curriculum or other qualifications for becoming a teacher were tougher, there would be less Supply and wages would increase.

Don’t forget Teacher unions

Top heavy districts

Misuse of funding

Take away their government funded pensions and increase their pay and they can work with a financial planner on their retirement needs. Tell them to vote out the unions for extra savings.

As I always say- bad teachers are greatly overpaid and good teachers are greatly underpaid.

They should be paid more, but not tenured. Pay based on student performance.

Some good stuff, and a lot of bullshite in the responses, as per usual when teaching is the subject. Wife has been a teacher for 15 years, FWIW.

Yes, benefits and time off are better than many jobs, but it’s not as much as people think. The 3 months off is really closer to 2 months. There are required workshops in the summer, every year. Most of the teachers I know, spend at least a week or two getting their classroom together in preparation for the start of the year.

She is at school at 7:30 every morning, school is out at 3:30. Then it is home, grading papers and inputting grades for at least 2 hours, most of the time 3 hours, and many times 4 hours or more. That’s a 10 hour day average, easy.

Teachers are also very subject to get volunteered to work concession stands, attend and/or help at functions of all kinds, chaperone proms, help with hospitality for basketball tournaments, etc. All after hours.

Then there are parent teacher meeting days, where she is at school until 8:30-9:00.

And sure math, English, etc. haven’t changed in 400 years, but how they are taught, the standards that are expected to be met, and the materials and information used to teach them changes with dismaying regularity.

Then you have special needs and behavioral problem children, that only seem to increase every year. Do you know that state requirements for these kids requires the teacher to follow individual plans for each special needs kid? Some of them have to have the material read to them. Some of them must be talked through each problem/question. Some must be given extra time to complete assignments. Some of them must have the number of problems/questions reduced, so they don’t get frustrated and violent. Some of them must have the problems/questions vetted, to better achieve the kids level of learning/understanding.

Then extensive reports must be written and compiled about each of these students, explaining how the teacher is employing all of these strategies to educate that one child.

Most people have no idea the amount of work teaching entails these days. And the thing that kills the good teachers souls and spirit is the fact that it is almost impossible to foster and challenge the exceptional kids, because so much time is spent on kids who have no business in a regular classroom to begin with.
