I’m guessing it’s because he’s the most famous sports gambler of the moment.

Doesn’t ESPN broadcast the spelling bee?

This isn't the first time they've done this. Ken Jennings got the same treatment after his run was over.

Jeopardy is better than half the garbage on that network.

Why on earth would he lose on purpose? I’ve seen other people with that take and it honestly hurts my brain

More sportsworthy than poker and video games.

When Alex was diagnosed, they decided to bring him on to get the ratings going and give him a nice farewell. So he gets there, boosts the ratings and the plan is going well. Fast forward to two weeks ago, cancer is in remission and they go oh nvm we're good. Boom here we are.

I would pay for a weekend live PPV Jeopardy tournament. Call it the Trebek invitational and raise money for cancer.

He was playing 5 games a day twice a week during the taping schedule, averaging 75K per victory so for every ten game taping week, he made 750K. "Working" about 2.5 hours each taping day.
Now, re read your post and see if that theory still makes sense to you.

You will NOT besmirch the National Spelling Bee in my presence

The shows are taped months in advance. The contestants in the last couple episodes to air on TV had only just heard of Trebek's cancer announcement. In real-time, Trebek, James, and the show staff have known for months that James lost.
