Looks like a repower is in my future. New or Used? (Update)

Well baws, my 20 year old Ficht (fricked) 225 motor gave up the ghost. The boat is also 20 years old but still in good condition and if I can get another 15-20 years out of it I’ll be very happy. I’m leaning towards new. Looking for opinions and deals.
Update - found a deal on a'18 G2 200H0. Pulled the trigger today.

New. No questions about it’s history.

Seems like Suzuki is taking over the repower world

Suzuki if you want a good budget motor. They are pretty cheap compared to the alternatives and are a pretty good motor.
Yammy if you want the most reliable motor on the market (besides the 350HP).
Merc if you have a sea tow membership, and wanna go fast.
I wouldn't hesitate too much on buying a low hours used yamaha 4 stroke. Just get the printout and have it looked at.

I'll be the one to say it
Get a new etech. Great warranty, very little maintenance, loads of power.
I have a G1 200HO and it's a monster.

Boat?
Max hp?
Weight of fitch anchor?
Where you located?
Budget?
Inclined to say zuk because it’s the only motor you can buy right now with service close by.
You’re not gettin a merc or yam for repower unless you have super human skreet kred. Tec’s have a limited service area in Louisiana. All of the current offering are good depending on your location, serving dealer, ect.

There is a story going around on BassBoatCentral about Suzuki and how they have been treating this one poor guy with a bad motor. It's just one guy and one motor, but I like to know all the info I can before making a purchase.
They have a Suzuki forum, and look under the General BassBoat Topics as well for his crazy story.
Just good to know it all.

Javelin Renegade 20
225 Max
Don't know, I'd have to look it up.
Laffy, I have a platinum Rude dealer 20 minutes down the road
No Budget, as in cheap.

Lots of lightly used optimax out there. I'd definitely go look at some. Many opti guys are pulling good motors for the newer stuff
Its helps to know the seller, individual or business. I wouldnt order one on Ebay or nothing crazy like that.
Theres nothing cheap about new. A new 225 will cost as much as a new cheap car.

I know. That’s what has me thinking 200HO instead of 225HO if I go with G2. They don’t make the standard 225 in 20” shaft.

I have a 200 ho and my buddy has a 250 optimax on identical hulls. I'll post results after we race.

A slightly used engine will probably only save a few thousand over new. I’d buy new unless you know the seller and the engine. New warranty, etc

Don't forget another 1000-1500 for new controls, prop, etc if you change brands. And also there is a shortage of 225 Mercs and Yamahas available for repowering right now. What happened to your Ficht ?

Even if I stick with Evinrude I’ll need new controls. Everything is fly by wire nowadays and the old controls are not compatible. Lost a cylinder on the Fitch. Looks like an injector went and the cylinder followed suit. And yes, I would love a new V8 Merc but that wait is so long!

Spent a couple months trying to find a 150-200 SHO when I was building my boat last year. Things were like unicorns or bigfoot. Ended up with a standard 150 and was lucky to get that at the time. Heard it hasn't gotten much better since then and Merc has gone down the same path. Suzuki is getting the business only due to having available stock. Yamaha said it wasn't production issues, demand is higher than they can currently keep up with. Good luck! Sure you'll enjoy no matter which way you go

I understand completely. I would maybe suggest staying in the 500-550lb range for your boat. I'm not sure what a Suzuki or Honda weigh but I think they are a little heavier than the big 3. My buddy ran a 20' Javelin for years with a Yamaha and it was a really good running boat. Would run 78 or so with a 27p Tempest.
I ran into the same kind of deal with my boat. I have a 91 20' Shadow tunnel and it was made for the lighter outboards back in the day. I put a 2003 Evinrude 225HO on it and it definitely affected the handling. I think if you went with a used G1 ETEC you could probably use your same controls, prop etc if you decide to go that route. From what I hear they are really good engines.

I think Houston is having a boat show soon . Etec may offer the 10 year warranty during the show.. that's when I got mine this winter.. my g2 has regular controls.. it's a 18 model

What size is it? Pretty sure the big ones are electric throttle/shift only

Site says 5 yr, 10 yr is on i-dock system.
Digital controls only from site.
225 is 558# so inline with what my proxs 250.
I believe they are good motors with a premium price.
Best bet is a used proxs with low hours, paid $8k for mine with 180 hours.
