Rice had a good run from mid/late 90’s until 2008. This isn’t a historic program. They’ve won 1 national title in 2003 and haven’t made it to Omaha since 2008. They haven’t been relevant in 11 years.

With the conference networks, the P5s are making more of a percentage of NCAA revenue than ever. This trickles down to baseball.

It’s horseshite like this that makes me root for the G5 guys even more, especially in baseball and softball.

Similar fate as Wichita State. That era of baseball is long gone and they just can’t compete recruiting wise on the nostalgia of a legacy coach/program.

The Rice, Tulane, Witchita State, Pepperdine, CSFs of college baseball are a dying breed. It will become P5 dominated just like football and basketball.

Rick Jones actually alluded to this near the end of his Tulane career. Small schools like Rice and Tulane probably won’t wreck shite anymore like they did in the early 2000’s, but I believe they can still be very successful.

So Coastal Carolina didn’t win the CWS 3 years ago?

Do you consider Coastal to be one of the best programs in america? Because all those schools at one point were among the elite. Not just one season. Coastal was a Cinderella. In their heyday you would not have considered it shocking for any of the those teams to win it all.

Throw Long Beach State into that same mix

Fullerton hasn't gone anywhere to be back. They went to the CWS in 2015 and 2017, and they hosted a Super Regional just last year. They had a down year this year, only 27-26, but they have been solid since they moved up to D1 in 1975. This was actually the first year they've missed a regional since 1991.

I’m curious if you think Tennessee wrecked shite in the early 2000s.

The sad thing is Graham actually wanted to stay
They should have got rid of him 5 years ago.
Some people just refuse to walk away.

One thing you can say about Bertman is he knew it was time from an age standpoint to get out of the way while he was still at the top of his game.

On another note I wonder who the new coach will be at Fla St - haven't heard much chatter. Wonder if they will just promote Mike Martin Jr to the role or where does he end up.

Fun fact: When Graham would make a mound visit, they had to play the Jeopardy theme song... twice!

Rice is rebuilding under a new coach and in 2 years will be competing for CUSA titles and perhaps more. I don't know if they will ever make it back to that level where they were national seed possibilities, but they will be good, certainly far from dead.

they did, and being in the Sun Belt will make it way harder to get the home regionals and super regionals to get back...

Coastal did not play at home in either the Regional or Super Regional round that year. Or do you not remember them coming to Baton Rouge and overwhelming LSU?

I’m pretty sure I remember CCU got a Super once and South Carolina beat them.

Rice will be back. They have unlimited money and now a household income of under $150k will qualify for need based FULL scholarship. That will allow Rice to stretch 11.7 like Vandy, LSU and Stanford do it. It may take a second as there wasn't much recruiting happening over the last two years.

I do, but most Omaha teams come from home regionals and super regionals, bc they were one of the best the whole season. That will only get harder for smaller programs to be
