Those gates sit below the road, I'm assuming they are worried they wont be able to get workers down there safely and hook on to them for removal.

Not sure where you seeing the river dropping in a week or so. The forecast show only rising a foot because they are opening the spillway.

That is a helluva margin of error, but they can’t accurately predict that far out.

I honestly think the river is gonna hang around until the end of July. The Arkansas River will be making its way down, along with all the rain in the Midwest.

No I’m not trolling everyone has there own opinion and no one knows what is going to really happen. What are you a hydrologist, what makes you right? All you are doing is watching the news. Basically what you believe is that flooding the spillway is the right thing to do because it might help prevent a break in the levee down stream. I agree with that, it will help relieve some stress on the levee. I just don’t believe that we need to purposely flood thousands of areas of land that will drastically affect people and wildlife. I would rather just ride it out. Yes I know it’s called a spillway for a reason but many people will have damage from it being opened. Leave the gates close and levee may or may not break. Open the gates is a guaranteed flood that will affect people. Oh and go ahead call me stupid because you sit there behind your phone. If you told me that in person I would have to frick you up.

so you don't think the Morganza spillway should've ever been built then, right?

This is the exact reason they're opening it. "May or may not" isn't good enough.

You are dumber than a sack of shite. Stop running your mouth and proving how dumb you are. Let the grownups talk and learn something in the process.

No truthfully I think we should have never stopped it from diverting down the atchafalaya river years ago. Man will never be able to control Mother Nature. We got away with it for a while and now we are seeing the problems we as man have caused. Just think about if we never would have built all these structures and let the river go it’s own way. We would have adapted to the river where it naturally wants to go. Sure city’s and plants would be in different locations, but we as people would have made things work. We have been forcing a river where it doesn’t want to go and are now dealing with the consequences.

So you think it's no big deal to just up and move cities and industries?
Yeah, frick it. If the river moves, the plants can just get up and follow it.

I guess the guy does not get it.
After the flood in the 1929 the Army Corp bought out people who lived in present day Henderson Lake. I have a book with pictures of homes on the lake and how they were built. They were built on piers and walkways were also built on piers. A railroad bridge was also built above ground as they understood that floods could come yearly.
My ancestor had property there and again was compensated for his land and was given the ability with that money to move elsewhere.

The land was bought for the purpose and when needed the Floodway designed to be open.

How simple is this to not figure out.

Cliff notes
- Army Corp owns most of land in Morganza spillway area and lease it well below what you would pay for similar land not in a floodway.

- people who use the land know the pitfalls they just do not want to come to that realization this year the year it needs to be flooded.

- If the gate opened slowly yes just like in spillway most animals will find higher ground.

- The land was designated for this purpose

Pretty simple to understand.
