Are More People Going To College Than There Really Needs To Be?

I know this falls into the whole "plant baw" thing, but I was talking to someone the other night and he was telling me his son started doing some type of instrumental class in HS. Once he graduated he had a job at a plant and they paid him to go to school.
Right now he goes to classes 2 days a week, gets paid $16/hr and the classes are included in his 40 hrs.
It seems like unless you are going to school to be a teacher, doctor, engineer, architect, lawyer, mass comm (media).. There are cheaper options out there to prepare you for a career.
Are their a lot more people attending college than really needs to?

What will the world do without blue haired majors in lesbian basket weaving to make our coffee?

Why do teachers need college anyway? Unless you want to teach college. As long as you get passed one grade higher than you want to teach they should let you go for it.

What an original query. I don’t think anyone has ever considered this. Let alone discussed it openly.

How cheap was it to prepare you for your career as a fluffer in the male porn industry?

You are just coming to this realization?

Yeah no doubt. Been happening for a while.

It's almost as if you had this weird ability to not notice one of the top 3 core OT topics that is universally agreed upon here in the last 10 years of your every single day posting
And of course you make a thread asking for the answer

Not the only professions that fall in this category, but yes, there are too many people going to college for no reason other than society says it's what you are supposed to do if you want to be successful.

It’s actually yes and no.
Let’s start with the reasons for NO.
For today’s graduating seniors, the majority of them will need some sort of post secondary certification/education in order to make more than $15 an hour. Which frankly is like bare minimum to move out of mom’s house.
Now the YES reasons are that these are careers that before would’ve been on the job training. So in theory, graduates should be qualified at entry level positions without having to take on extra debt just to get specific training for a specific field.
And of course there’s the whole- you’re a loser and dumb if you don’t go to college mentality. Which most high schools are getting away from now with different diploma tracks.
It’s a complex issue.

Also, do we have more colleges than we really need? Yes, by a long shot.

Yes, most going for majors that wont pay back their loans in a hundred years. Unless youre going to be a Doctor or an engineer ect, go to a tech school and make it easier on yourself.

Soon, maybe now, non-college degrees will pay more, and be in more demand, than college-educated professions.
Think plumbers, electricians, etc.
Then, the shine will be off the college degree turd.

Yes
This has been obvious for a very long time.

It just depends on your degree. If you’re getting a useless degree in gender studies and paying $10,000+ per semester for college then you are an idiot because there is no chance in hell you’d be able to pay your dept back. Those are the people who want socialism in this country so that others can pay for them to make a stupid mistake and get a degree in something that is just completely useless.

When I was coming up, there wasn’t such an abundance of kids going off to college. There seemed to be a more equalized distribution of college/trades but schools and parents pushed college more. There was also a larger disparity in income potential between college graduates and trades people. Now, there is a severe shortage for the trades (with a more even income range) and an over abundance of college grads to the point that even grad schools are growing exponentially.

I told my son he can study anything he wants in college, but if it's not a marketable program, he better plan on double majoring.
