re: Whats the point of buying a Rolex?

I have never paid attention to another mans watch.

Bought my Submariner when I was in Indonesia in 97 when the Asian Financial Crisis hit. The dealer flew in from Jakarta with a huge selection for me to choose from. Everybody needed cash

Got it for $1200

22 years later and I have never had the urge to buy another watch and my wife knows that buying one for me as a gift would be a waste. Not a bad investment.

If your not a collector it is actually a solid investment as you can wear it the rest of your life. I’ll probably give mine to my son if my old man doesn’t give his to the boy

Unlike many products, Rolex quality is actually SIGNIFICANTLY better than they were 20 years ago and light years beyond what they were in the 60s and 70s. Their quality control is probably better than any watch manufacturer. That is not to say the early Rolex movements can't run for generations if they are properly maintained.

Rolex, Omega, Patek and Grand Seiko have the highest accuracy/precision "guarantee" of any of the major mechanical watch brands.

Keep in mind particularly in the 60s and early 70s Rolex was just a solid watch, nothing special about them at all. They were fairly cheap as good watches went. They still outsourced most of their parts and the quality varied from lot to lot that may have been sourced from a different manufacturer. Many of the dials faded or aged in some odd way and despite the "defect" some of those have become the most sought after. Tropical dials (ones that have faded from black to brown, spider web dials (literally cracked to the point of looking like a web) and stardust dials (they have dots on them like a star map) have become very sought after especially in Subs.

For a long time Rolex had very poor bracelets that stretched and just felt cheap, Rolex turned that around and now has the most precisely machined bracelets out there, even if they aren't the most complex. Any watch with spring bars (save a few exceptions) I can remove and replace the bracelet with anything from an actual Bergeon spring bar tool to a paperclip. To change out a newer Rolex bracelet safely you need a pair of spring bar pliers or spring bar tweezers. The tolerances between the endlinks and lugs are very small. While the quality has gone up significantly the price has followed along as well.

I would buy one of the high end knockoffs that go for 500-600 bucks. They are so accurate in reproduction that it requires a jeweler that knows the difference to remove the back and examine the movement to determine if its fake. More than a few people have paid $1500.00-$2000.00 for one under the impression they were getting a great deal on a real Rolex only to be surprised when they take it in for the first cleaning.

. Rarely do you have to remove anything but you have to know what to look for. Hell a jewelers loop on the dial will tell you if a fake majority of the time.
