Ichiro just retired from baseball in the Mariners A’s game in Japan. Pretty awesome moment, baseball isn’t going to be the same without him.

He was a dinosaur in this three true outcomes world

Pretty incredible that he was able to play at this level for such a long time. I mean these last few years he wasn’t what he once was obviously, but he was still servicable and athletic as hell for a 45 year old.

He retired last April.

Already had 9 years in Japanese pro ball before signing with Seattle

The man had 200 hits a year for an entire decade. Unbelievable talent.

I love the story of him getting the Big Unit’s number and writing him a letter promising not to disgrace his legacy by playing poorly while wearing it.

And another piece of childhood gone. Think he may be the last that was still around. :(
Eta. Still holding on to Vince carter here in Atlanta too. Then that may be it.

My favorite all time player
I used to love the Ichi-rolls at the stadium, when I was stationed up there

In a culture of self loving selfie taking egotistical assholes in sports, he was a true professional. What an incredible talent and person. Baseball will definitely miss him.

Let us not forget, he would whoop Ken Griffey Jr’s arse in homerun derby during BP

One of the best right field throwing arms of all time.

Ichiro’s rookie season was crazy. Seattle had lost Randy Johnson, then Griffey Jr., then A-Rod to free agency in three consecutive offseasons.
The Mariners had built a nice roster with a bright future, but they couldn’t hold onto their superstars. They responded by signing a slender slap hitting Japanese player. A lot of people doubted his body could handle 162 games, or if he was even good enough to be an everyday player.
Ichiro made an immediate splash, and the Mariners had an incredible season winning 116 games.
