re: Thoughts on the Players becoming a Major Championship?

For me, it gives some people undeserving major titles which changes legacy and potential hall of fame resumes. Guys like Rickie Fowler and Matt Kuchar should not be considered major champions because the Players did not have the same sort of pressure coming down the stretch.
Imagine if the Indian Wells tournament was added as a 5th major, and a guy like Ivan Ljubicic was now considered a major champion. That just seems unfair to me.

quote:Being a somewhat fluid term back in 1950 doesn't lessen its meaning at all in today's world where specific tournaments mean more than others to everyone involved. There have always been tiers with way more complexity beyond Majors vs. others. However, the Majors have been the same 4 since the 60s.
So much meaning they have changed about 6-7 times and potentially is about to change again
quote:Counting them is the simplicity that people like. That doesn't reflect on the moniker itself.
I said this is why people like the term

The Players can never be a major because the tournament is set up by the players playing in the tournament so it will never be an actual test of Major Championship level golf. Whether it be the green jackets at Augusta, USGA, R&A or the PGA of America, the other four majors have governing bodies that generally (with some obvious unfortunate concessions) try their best to set up the course to ensure the greatest possibility of the best golfer winning the tournament, separate from any outside influence.
Look at the condition of the course for the week- completely over-seeded, softened to ensure the least amount of headache for the competitors. This week will not be a Major Championship test, and as long as the PGA Tour is in charge it will never be.

I get the moving it around thing. Arnold Palmer basically defined what the Majors are. That’s absolutely happened before and I know the retroactively adding majors thing has happened.
I just really, really don’t want to see that happen now.

You don’t see the tours fascination in the event? It’s the best of the best. Best field of the year.

You understand almost all south venues are overseaded for greener and more flush grass?

Dawgs. A major that gives undeserving champions is the PGA Champ.

I don't think it is or will ever be considered a Major. It's got the best field with the biggest purse so it is obviously the biggest non-major tourny. The masters, US Open, and Open Championship all have some type of flair that sets it appart.
The Master's has the alure and awe around Augusta National, no tournament will ever have that. While the US Open is the toughest test played on near concrete greens, it shouldn't be copied. The Open has the game's history and "the way golf was meant to be played" in the elements with sideways rain and what not. IMO the PGA is kind the 4th meh one and I don't see the point in adding a fifth meh one. Just leave it as the biggest non major

Dormant Bermuda is the GOAT.
It's sad the Tour ruins golf courses week in and week out in order for it to be green on TV

Why?

Because it's firm and fast and brings strategy into play and narrows fairways and greens. Overseeing makes it soft which takes all strategy out of the game. It takes out the ground game and turns it into a dart competition.

I get what you're saying and agree in principle with making the golf course firmer and faster for pros, but my experience in the South at least is that the dormant bermuda is generally thin and can get sloppy. I might just be thinking that right now because of how much rain we've had all winter. Every ball seems to nestle down and leave a poor lie because it's so thin right now.

Well there is a difference between Sawgrass and Santa Maria to be fair. Some of the most fun and challenging rounds of golf I've ever played were in October when grass was going dormant. Makes the greens super fast

It's not just Santa Maria, it's all over from what I've seen. I'll agree October golf when the grass is just going dormant is great. Early March golf when the grass has been dormant for 4-5 months sucks.

I've never played better greens than Squire Creek in early fall. Better than the summer without a doubt.
