Merely moving the money from one account to another can get you hammered.

His mom's not happy

Tallahassee Police officers allowed Whiddon to call his mother from the back of their cruiser. He told her he’d spent the money on car payments, rent, guitars and amps which she rebuffed saying she paid his car note.

People are stupid
He would make like what 1500 off of that?
Think spending the 68k before they can take it is the better strategy

This doesn't make sense. At $550/hr, that means he worked less than 5 hours a week.
Yeah he wasn’t hourly for the full seven months and I’m not sure exactly when he got demoted. Radio said six months at hourly but that could be incorrect.

a burger joint manager makes $550 an hour !!!!!!!!
$550 a week
He was getting his weekly salary as an hourly rate. And, he either worked very few hours a week, or he only clocked in that way sometimes, hoping he could get away with it.

These errors happen by normal computer errors.
But they are not “caught” quickly because most employees don’t really care about their job. They only care about getting their work done between social media postings and internet browsing.
If that was a small business where the boss wrote his own payroll - it would have been caught week #1.

They don't track hourly labor percentages?

How is it a scam? The company has no loyalty to you. They will throw you under the bus at a moment’s notice if it benefits them. If the screwup wasn’t intentional, then it falls on the employer.
If I magically started getting $20,000 checks I'm pretty sure I'm responsible for telling my employer they messed up

Sounds to me like this guy stumbled into a money laundering scheme, and it took them six months to realize they were paying the wrong “person in charge.” Kind of like that movie Blank Check.

The manager of the store agreed not to press criminal charges if Whiddon paid half of the money back.
So dude would’ve still gotten to pocket $275/hr for 6 months.
Sweet deal. Too bad he’s a dumbass.

This happened at my old company. Some lady at the factory was making $75/hr instead of $7.50. It was a simple decimal error.

That's great. Lots of sandwiches sold.

The interest would be peanuts. They caught him after 6 months. Even if they gave him the lump sum of $70k to start with what is he going to make in interest? 2 or 3 thou?
Guarantee he had more fun with the 70 than he would have with the 3.
70k > 3k

Money laundering. What sammich shop doesn’t notice this for six month? Don’t care how many locations or stores you have.

hope he at least kept the red stapler

Exactly what I was thinking. When I managed a restaurant in undergrad our software had up to the second labor cost data. If my labor cost percentage got too high had to send someone home. No way the manager didn't see insanely high labor cost.

So he was working an avg of 4.5 hrs a week?
$68,869 / $550 = 125.22 hrs
125.22 hrs / 7 months = 17.89 hrs / month
17.89 hrs / month / 4 weeks = 4.47 hrs per week.
$68,869 / $550 = 125.22 hrs
125.22 hrs / 7 months = 17.89 hrs / month
17.89 hrs / month / 4 weeks = 4.47 hrs per week.

Yea, no shite. I know you mention your old company but in this particular case, at $550 an hour, I would be a PERFECT employee. I wouldn't even waste a second on OT.
