One of the experiences in my life that I’m really looking forward to is becoming a parent. I understand that having kids presents a variety of challenges and from what I’ve heard, in order to be a good parent, there is a lot of self-sacrifice involved... time, energy, money etc.

My question for you parents is, what is it really like? Do you feel joy knowing that you created a life and the satisfaction that comes from raising children? Those with step-children/adopted kids, what is your experience like?

That moment when you first saw your child after they were born, would you say that was one of the greatest moments of your life?

Have you ever owned a dog?

It's like jogging. It sucks the whole time, but every now and then, you feel good about it and get some euphoric experiences and somehow it seems worthwhile.

I would think it’d be a lot like the dog scenario. Where you see the best parts out in public with good owners and well trained dogs.

Then you go get a dog and it’s nothing like that, and is your most regretted decision for about 10 years or until it dies.

Craziest roller coaster you'll ever ride. And it NEVER ends. Well, I suppose it CAN end, but only way it ends is in a manner no parent ever wants to experience. So, I'll just say it never ends.

You forget about things like sleeping through the night when you want to or just sleeping in.

Its more the interaction when they get older and them looking up to you, IMO

You get a $2,000 tax credit per kid. That has to be nice.

Don’t let these morons get you down. You get out of it what you put into it. Sure, you will get frustrated, lose your temper, and it will consume all of your time. That said, it’s the best thing I’ve ever done.

Being tired is now just a part of life. Seriously you will always be exhausted. Anyone saying the opposite is either a liar or a drug peddler

No matter how sweet they are starting out, they all turn into surly teenagers.

It is the greatest thing you could ever do but it is also the hardest, most frustrating, and never ending thing you will ever do.

It is a nonstop roller coaster of wonderful moments followed by head scratching moments.

I wouldn't trade it for the world.

It's sort of like doing your own taxes.

There are hours of boredom in between moments of sheer terror....

Yes, but if you have a good partner some of that can be minimized.

Tiring, but rewarding.

Yes.

I love the shite out of it. Although it's exhausting most of the time, it's still fun. And my kid is cool. I guess It's as good as you want it to be or as bad as you want it to be, though. If you get pissed because you're having to do "parent" shite and only want to be doing the fun stuff, then you're not ready to be a parent. You just need a friend.

First few years is basically being a servant to them and making sure they don't kill themselves.

Mine isn't raised yet, so we will see what satisfaction I get from it. The good times are a ton of fun though.

I wouldn't call it my greatest moment. It's just a kid, most of the population can do the same thing, the dumb ones are really good at it. People who live through their kids are the worst.

The greatest, most rewarding experience ever, but it is also the most difficult, emotionally exhausting and expensive thing you will ever do.

You will never be ready emotionally or financial(unless you are already rich) but do not let that deter you. You will make it work.

I have two regrets, I wish had more kids and started sooner.

More than you can fathom. You think you understand going into it but you don't.

It's like golf...after you said every swear word you know and are ready to toss your clubs into the drink you hit a magic putt that makes you think "ah that wasn't so bad - I could get used to this".

At first not really but as time goes on this part dramatically creates a sense of fulfillment

Maybe in hindsight I'll say it was but to me it wasn't. I was probably more freaked out by the realization that shite just got real... And I was suffering from a severe lack of sleep.
