"We also estimated that between 2015 and 2025, around 700,000 people are projected to die from an opioid overdose," said researcher Jagpreet Chhatwal.
"Efforts to curb the epidemic by reducing the incidence of prescription opioid misuse -- the primary focus of current interventions -- will have a modest effect of 3-5 percent reduction in overdose deaths," Jagpreet Chhatwal, a researcher at Institute for Technology Assessment at Massachusetts General Hospital, told UPI. "The multipronged approach is needed that includes strategies to identify people who have opioid use disorder, improving access to medications for opioid use disorder such as buprenorphine and methadone, and improving access to harm-reduction services."

"access to harm reduction services" means what?

Meh, who cares? Maybe they shouldn’t get hooked in the first place? Let Darwinism do it’s thing.

Not all of thes deaths can be lumped into the same category. Not all start as street level addicts. Many get hooked because of overzealous doctors handing pills out like candy for pain relief. If youve ever seen the real life effects of the addiction then you wouldnt understand that it is indeed a real, physical sickness. Its not fricking phony like cigarettes and far worse than alcholism on a day to day physical illness level.

Dude, I saw what those things can do to a normal person in no time like crack.
I have them and I do not used them till I can't go no more. I can see how someone could get hooked on them in a weeks time easy. What really sets them off if someone drinks a couple beers and it's like there is no stop to them.

You are not far from how I feel about this subject.. The improvements in medicine.. the longer some people live..so let's give a shove to the bad people on the edge.

Because the industry tells them they have to treat pain like a 5th vital sign. Also...many of the meds they were prescribed they were told were not as addictive as other opioids.
As a nurse I was taught over and over "Pain is the 5th vital sign" "Don't forget to treat the patient's pain" "Pain is whatever the patient says it is". Didn't want those patient satisfaction scores for the hospital going down cause the patient had pain. So don't hesitate to give them pain meds and make sure to get the doctor to order them pain meds. Again...can't have those scores going down.

Impossible to know what will happen in 2025.

I know someone that very recently went into psychosis because of weed. It's not as safe as I thought or that people make out. Weed psychosis is very real and this person did not smoke a lot to get there. Scary as hell.

Yeah because frick chemistry and physiological facts, right?
I've seen some really straight laced people battle, and overcome encounters with opioids, and each time it was a result of surgery recovery. A habit can sneak up very quickly and bite you in the arse.

Well maybe they should practice a little self-awareness and when that habit starts to form.... uhhh, you know... quit.

A pill that helps people everyday as long as you don’t take 20 and drink a 12 pack at one time is the villain because people don’t have self control.

AS a 61 year old and smoked crap back in the 1970's, stopped due to raising a family/work, then smoked some about 7 years ago, I can see this happening. The stuff that now is like 20x more stronger then back in my days.

I had a gunshot wound and a broken jaw within 10 months from each other about 10 years ago. I had taken so many pain killers that I had to have a medical detox to get back right. I will tell any doctor now that I can't take oxycodone or hydrocodone because I would rather suffer than go through the withdrawal symptoms. frick the pharmaceutical lobby and the doctors that are complicit.

Nailed it.
There is pain and then there is PAIN. The thought process that we should be free of the slightest discomfort is madness.
Then folks who have true ailments that require pain management are often improperly diagnosed and the root cause of their pain is missed. That is until they require detox measures.
