There's a difference between running zone as a change of pace, running zone a lot and running zone almost exclusively. Cregg runs zone blocking almost exclusively, based on his track record and coaching history.
What blocking scheme do you prefer?

In today's football most teams are inside/outside zone teams, and occasionally will mix in a power (down, down, kickout) scheme. The zone takes up more practice time, and with the birth of the H you can use him as your puller and keep a guard in.

we used a mix of inside and wide zone (see 1st td vs miami) this year.. there weren't as many pull schemes as during the miles era (toss dive was actually toss power) but we did run some

You did when you were shitting on miles scheme. The scheme more productive than 2018 scheme.
Its amazing watching you football ignorant posters go from" scheme is holding us back" to" scheme? frick that. Its all about talent"

Both types blocking can be used for different, and even same type plays in a game, or even series.

The use of that motion man as a blocker (and deception). Everybody focused on the jet sweeps, but being able to put that blocker at point of attack through motion simplified assignments for the OL, often gave both the motion man and OL better blocking angles, made it somewhat easier for OL to get to second level, and could freeze LBs making combo blocks more effective.
And you don't have to run Canada's scheme to do it. That's what baffled me this year. If you are going to get away from power using the FB while still using you inside teams use that motion to give you that power wham.

I don't think our lack of performance is as much a physical thing, as a scheme/execution thing. Review film and you will see play after play where we had 2-3 OL not make a single block, primary or secondary... It's amazing. Need to get this fixed with coaching and repetition, or 2019 will be another long year for the OL.

That's a not knowing what to do thing.

I’m tired of hearing the excuse that we don’t have the talent, it’s a lame excuse.
Name an LSU olineman that would start over one of theirs. Seriously.

He’s not that much better
He may be the highest rated draft prospect when it’s all said and done. So yes. He is that much better. And I’m a Burrow guy 100%

I've tried to convey here and failed. Probably because I suck at the conveyance part and not stupidity on others part.
But lets put it this way, playing off what you said, when I see OL looking for someone to block, actively charging after or at someone, and the RB being tackled behind them.... we at least have scheme as part of the problem.
I don't care if pulling, doing a reach block, kick-out, etc. the idea is to get a hat on someone. If they can't before the play is over, we have scheme/design issues.
And I do see this. I wouldn't say often by any means, but enough to frustrate the hell out of me.

yes there were varied schemes under miles, i was just saying that we used more pull schemes later in his tenure. toss dive is the play that most people remember from the miles era on this board
if i remember correctly grimes and ensminger used double g schemes vs Ole Miss in 2016

quote:Agree. Hardly ever ran straight dive plays contrary to what tRant heard sportscasters say and parroted.
toss dive

I played center and noseguard in for most of my football career. When I see an offensive lineman not lay a finger on anybody I see a man that doesn't know his assignment, hasn't bothered to learn the playbook or doesn't understand his position.

I agree stars are subjective but star rankings are surprisingly accurate.
Yep.
Both incoming talent (recruiting rankings) and outgoing talent (NFL Drafts) corroborate that talent hasn't been an issue at LSU in a long time.
Bama has better talent than us but I don't think there's the talent disparity that we all "saw on the field" when we played them.
