Athlon's Way-Too-Early Top 25 College Football Rankings for 2019

Low expectations surrounded LSU in 2018, but coach Ed Orgeron guided the program to a 10-3 record. After starting ’18 ranked near the bottom of the top 25, the Tigers will be a preseason top 10-15 team. The offense still has room to improve under coordinator Steve Ensminger, but the personnel losses are expected to be minimal on this side of the ball. Quarterback Joe Burrow and leading receiver Justin Jefferson are back, while the passing game could get a boost if Terrace Marshall and Ja’Marr Chase develop as sophomores. Clyde Edwards-Helaire and incoming freshman John Emery are likely to anchor the ground game with Nick Brossette departing Baton Rouge. Guard Garrett Brumfield is the only senior starter up front, so an offensive line that dealt with injuries and inconsistency at times should be even better in 2019. As usual under coordinator Dave Aranda, LSU’s defense will rank among the best in the SEC. Aranda does have some personnel voids to fill, as cornerback Greedy Williams left for the NFL, and linebacker Devin White could follow. If Kristian Fulton decides to return, he’ll join anchor a secondary that features All-America safety Grant Delpit and promising cornerbacks in Kelvin Joseph and five-star freshman Derek Stingley. Linebacker K’Lavon Chaisson returns after missing nearly all of 2018 due to injury. A road trip to Austin on Sept. 7 to take on Texas looms large, but Florida, Auburn and Texas A&M all visit Baton Rouge next fall.
Of interest:
1. Alabama
2. Clemson
3. Georgia
4. Oklahoma
5. Ohio State
6. Texas
7. Florida
8. Michigan
9. LSU
10. Texas A&M

I was thinking LSU would probably be ranked somewhere around 6 or 7 preseason next year
oh well
either way the Texas game should still be a top 10 matchup
going to be fun

Swap us and Texas and would make a lot more sense, they lose a lot.
And one of these days they will finally be right about Michigan as a Top 10 team, next year once again probably wont be it

Athlon always gives us the lowest ranking of all sites/publications. I'm thinking 6-7 considering what we return next year and impact players in this recruiting class.

Looking at those preseason rankings and recruiting rankings, it doesn't appear that the rest of the country is catching up to the SEC, which it seems was a growing narrative about two years ago.

Typically I like to temper my expectations, but I just can't this year. This team is going to be absolutely loaded headed into 2019. The defense, even with White's departure, may be even better. If White returns we may very well have 3 of the top 10 defensive players in the nation all on the field at the same time.
The offense will only improve. Burrow will be given an entire off-season to develop chemistry with a lot of really talented receivers. He will have better pass protection, as well as a very strong ground game on which to lean.
2019 looks VERY promising.

Texas loses their entire defense and possibly 2 leading WRs
How are they above LSU which return everybody?

Georgia didn't look top ten last night.

I don't think Texas is preseason top 10. They lose too many players. This seems to be what AP preseason poll is based on unless your name is Alabama.

Texas loses some significant players. They'll be good, but I don't know if I'm ready to say #6 just yet. They still lost 4 games this past season. This is a bit of an overreaction to last night.
Other than the name "Michigan" and Harbaugh's past glory at other stops (Stanford, San Francisco), why is Michigan still thought of so highly? In 4 years of the Harbaugh era they still don't have a signature win or a win over Ohio St. In fact, most of the time they don't even look like they belong on the same field with any team with a pulse. The highest final ranking they've had under Harbaugh is #10...yet they're the projected #8 team in the country next season? How about you actually do something of note first.

So we likely have to beat the 1,3,6,10 from that list to get into the playoffs. Jesus

I haven’t even looked at other teams returning starters yet, but even I can tell you LSU should be a top-5 team with everything we have coming back.
Posted on 1/2/19 at 3:45 pm to The Egg
And LSU plays four of these teams!

Michigan shouldn’t be ranked again until they beat a ranked team. turrable
