I look down at them from my lifted F250. They have nice roofs.

Used to look down at those roofs from mine and cry when diesel was over four bucks a gallon

Ours was great until the electrical bullshite ramped up into year 5. We had to get rid of it because BMW could never seem to fix the problem and the car became unreliable. It was a bad arse car to drive when it worked. 750li.

B58 engine (very good). 8 speed auto. Get an extended warranty. Something will break (all BMWs break) and it will be costly when it does. To love BMW, you have to LOVE BMW. It's always been love/hate for me. Mostly love though. I always own one.

What year model was yours and what kinds of electrical problems did you have?

If I get one, I will definitely get the ext warranty.

Bimmerforums is fairly helpful. Good mixture of advice and how-to.

I have had 3 of them over a 15 year period and each one was fabulous until the maintenance start getting out of control. While under warranty they are the best and once you start paying for repairs you want to sell them.
fwiwi...I had a 86' 528e a 92' 535 and a 98' 740i
Like somebody said..Love Affair!

740Ld xDrive is a dream car for me. I need the AWD in MT and the diesel is appealing for highway drives.

Just hope and pray the dealer won't run the clock out on warranty repairs and leave you fricked.
Long reddit thread of a guy who had 3 different bmw dealerships deny anything was wrong with the car, despite the owner directing the service department to check certain things. Basically his warranty was about to run out and he wanted to get everything done before it expired. Dealerships essentially told him there was nothing to be done. Warranty expired and surprise surprise, all the things he asked them to check suddenly needed to be replaced.
BMW Corporate told him they don't control the dealers and that he was SOL.

Why not lease one for a year to check it out?

5 series, were probably the best vehicles I’ve owned
I had a 5 series and my mom had a 5 series. Both great cars. The new BMWs now are different. More elctronics, and bigger. The current 3 series is the size of my old E39 5 series.
Buddy had a 2001 750iL with the V12, that was the most fun car I've ever driven.
2001 750iL is the greatest BMW of all time

I haven’t thought of leasing. I may check it out. In the past, it never made sense financially with the penalties on mileage. I used to put 40-50k per year in a car.

Same here, I put way too many miles on my vehicles

You should only consider leasing if you put around 15k mi/yr or less on the car. Too much more than that and you’ll get hit with big penalties.
If you can find a “demo” (used for a few months by a dealership manager or bmw executive), you can usually get pretty good lease deals on these things.

A family member has the '18 750i with the Executive rear seat option.
Had it for almost a year, zero issues, less than 20k miles on it.
It's a lease, it will go back to BMW after 24 to 36 months.
Beautiful motorcar.
I'd think long and hard before planning to keep one as long as I do with Lexus cars. (6-8 years)
A rule of thumb told to me by an old-tiemr about cars:
Every time you change one for another, there's a financial premium to the exchange. You lose on every exchange so choose wisely and buy long-term.
Mrs: Füt's last four vehicles:
1993-2000: 1993 Nissan Quest (150k)
2000-2008: 2001 Chevrolet Suburban (180k)
2008-2017: 2008 Lexus ES (215k)
2017-now: 2017 Lexus NX (30k so far)

I wouldn’t purchase one with over 25k miles on it unless it’s certified preowned. I’ve owned an M3 and a 335i sedan and they were both great vehicles that were fun to drive.
at around 46k my M3 started having issues with the transmission as well as the front axles. Also had an odd size rear wheel that was expensive as frick to replace the tires on.
TLDR don’t buy without it under warranty
