In the clip he gives a team speech that is fricking classic

No he couldn't, he would be too mean and tough...

Yeah, I think a lot of the linebackers from those days would have massive issues playing in space against the players of today.

Well yeah, because he could barely walk.
quote:
When I first saw the injured knee I told Butkus that the knee was almost gone, that he would be lucky if he did not lose the lower leg, that he should not even be walking on that leg and certainly should not consider trying to play football again
When he was standing upright, the injured leg was bent sideways so far that it appeared to be on the bare edge of breaking off at the knee.

A highschool friend played with Butkus when both were with the Bears. RB was a DE/OLB and said that Butkus was the "absolute meanest human being he had ever played with" . He also said at practice even the offensive players were scared of him. Butkus could play ball anywhere anytime.

Butkus is my favorite football player of all time

Damn right he could. He had great ball instincts, and intercepted 25+ passes.

I mean he’d probably have a hard time in space with the more explosive skill players but so do most linebackers. But playing the big physical run stopping game...absolutely.

Just think what a healthy Gayle Sayers would do in todays game......

He could, but he's 76. He'd likely get a few votes for the Pro Bowl, but I doubt he'd make it.

I hate comparing past legends of the game to current players, really think it ought to be the converse since the predecessors set the precedent and were influences but I think Butkus would basically be like Urlacher in today's game, a prototype not sure how long his career would be because his greatest strength (the reckless abandon with which he tackled and converged on a ball carrier) was his downfall in causing career-ending injuries and rendering only a nine-year career

Not anymore. The NFL of my youth is long gone.
