I mean he’d probably have a hard time in space with the more explosive skill players but so do most linebackers. But playing the big physical run stopping game...absolutely.

Big nasty run stopping LBs have been somewhat diminished like Running backs have.

Sure. But that wasn’t the question posed by the OP.

Of course he could still play today if he was in his prime. The guy was an animal and that kind of talent transcends time. Just like Walter Payton being a productive running back in today's game, it's a no brainer.

If Butkus could tackle OJ Simpson who was a world class sprinter; on the 4X100 relay team that shattered the WR...

I don't think he'd have trouble tackling today's backs.

Shite, some of you act like he played in 1880.

He had the size of today and was super instinctual at a position that is perhaps the most instinctual.

He would be very good on obvious run downs, but not much more, he is in his mid 70’s

He was a sideline-to-sideline tackler in his day, excellent blitzer, and had coverage skills. Plus his leadership and guts.

Ditka said, "I love Walter Payton, but nobody ever ran with a football under his arm like Gale Sayers".

A reminder of how the game used to be played

The one thing that really sticks out in that clip is Butkus had ridiculous closing speed on a tackle for his size.

They talk about closing speed with DBs but look quick Butkus is in getting to the runner.

If Brian Urlacher could play in the modern game, there's no doubt Butkus could.

Butkus also said the league has always been trying to screw over the defense (talking about all these new Goodell "safety rules".)

Butkus pointed out how the league, even 50 years ago, was always trying to help offenses score more points.

"Every year when I was playing, (the NFL) was always, 'OK, how are we gonna f— the defense?'" the six time All-Pro said. "We need points, people want to see points. So every year it was always something (changing) to now, where offensive linemen can hold you if they do it right. It's tough."
