I think manned space exploration is a must. From mining operations on the moon or asteroids to terraforming on Mars it all has to happen. We definitely need to come up with technology to get where we want to go faster. Much faster.

You just finished reading Pillar to the Sky, didn't you?

At this time at least.
Yes there's no point in planning for the future right now. Just wait until the future gets here and then plan for it.

Some of you don't read so good.
If you fit this category I'll emphasize, I am not advocating Stopping space research and development and trodding back into a cave. Nor am I advocating Not dreaming big.
I am advocating dreaming realistically, and progressively toward an ultimate goal.
and I get the point of unmanned space research, but honestly humans are the second biggest stumbling block to long term space travel. And Humans are going to have to be in space to figure out a lot of this stuff.
Example: One of the biggest unknowns I can think of with long term space flight ( I mean long term think generational) is the affects of long term weightlessness and low gravity on human reproduction? From Conception to birth in low gravity I don't know of any animal tests being done much less human research.

Not a good start, research is everything. We need more thinkers, most of us are wasting our minds on youtube, netflix and pornhub

Necessity is the mother of invention.
Throwing smart people in a room with orders to just think shite up that we’ll actually attempt to apply decades from now is not a way to advance technology.

The innovations driven by space travel even to the moon were well worth the money it took to get Apollo there.

Nope. We need to spend this time working on more worthy pursuits like getting the best possible football recruits to come to LSU.

I've always thought that it may be more important to explore our oceans further since it seems like we could benefit more from it in the near term.

We should be busting arse to colonize the Moon.
It's got a shitton of frozen water under its surface. No cloud cover which means you could set up solar arrays for all the power the colony would need (even if you built the colony itself on the dark side, you could put the arrays on the sunny side).
It's close and easily reachable if something goes wrong.

I think space travel is one of the things that unites us as a species and could potentially prevent us from fricking eating each other in the long term.
In terms of the technology that was created either directly or indirectly by the Apollo missions, I wonder if there is a kind of diminishing returns when it comes to space travel as it currently exists. In other words, would a manned mission to Mars really yield as many significant advancements as the initial trip to the moon did? I’m inclined to say no, but who the frick knows.
I think until there is some kind of frameshift discovery in physics, our potential is kind of stunted and further spending on space travel may not be as beneficial as everyone in this thread would have you believe. But I’m kinda talking out of my arse and still definitely support it cause space is kewl.

If we invent space travel and colonize Mars how long until the demographics show up?

White males aren't allowed on Mars fwiw

The most important thing for us in space is to figure out how to avoid an asteroid hit.
The next most important thing is for us to figure out how to harness the power of our sun efficiently or find a limitless clean energy source.
The next is to figure out how to control our climate/weather.
I think travelling to Mars / Moon etc is important too. It is primarily important to keep the excitement building so the research dollars keep flowing. But, it isn't as important as the above.

Locating and tracking all "planet killing" asteroids/comets seems to be more difficult than deflecting/destroying ones that have the potential to impact Earth.

Skunk Works filed a patent earlier this year for a new type of fusion reactor. Apparently they have a new type of magnetic containment device that doesn't require near the amount of energy the Tokamak device needs for containment. If successful, humans would essentially "harnessed the power of the sun".

What we should be doing is investing heavily in research and technology in orbital vehicles and being able to build in orbit as securely, cheaply and quickly as possible.
End game is long distance space travel.
Spread humanity throughout the stars so that no plague or disaster, whether natural or manmade, could wipeout our species.

With our limited technology (yes it is greatly limited when considering the idea of lengthy space travel).
