The director recently spoke about visiting the set of the movie currently in production and while he, of course, couldn't go into specifics, Smith told GMA Day that seeing the movie in production, and one performance in particular, brought him to tears. According to Smith...

"J.J.'s doing the lord's work. This movie looks fantastic. It's a year away, but man, it looks fantastic. I wept on set because I saw somebody give a career-best performance. Somebody I've seen in these movies before. I rolled a tear, it was so darn powerful. Biggest set I've ever seen in my life. The dude's not directing a movie. It's like he's directing a small country."

Smith was then asked if the incredible things he saw had something to do with the events of The Last Jedi, and in an answer that may prove reassuring to the detractors of Rian Johnson’s flick, he said that the moments he witnessed were connected to the saga in general rather than Episode IX’s immediate predecessor:

“It had nothin’ to do with Last Jedi. The things I saw, that blew my mind are on a Star Wars-level. All universe, all flicks. There were some details I heard that *gasps* since they’re wrapping this up with nine.”

Looking forward to it. I’ve never watched a bad Star Wars movie.

So? He wept on his Avengers Endgame trailer reaction video too. I think he weeps a lot now. PTSD.

Kevin Smith thought Phantom Menace was a masterpiece. I like his movies but he's a classic fanboy that can see no wrong with Star Wars. Plus, obviously he's friends with JJ so it's not like he's gonna shite on the guy's movie.

Abrams is pretty solid, as long as he's involved with it I will be more likely to buy a ticket.

Even if I had ridden to the theater with someone else and had sneaked into the theater without paying for any ticket, I would still have felt like I was robbed after watching TLJ.

I mean I do. . .but TLJ just destroyed the SW allure for me.

I get disgusted thinking about storylines and characters that used to excite me.

I will probably stream it, if I hear enough good things.

He can weep all he wants. Dude is lucky as frick to be alive and he knows it. He's pretty much happy about everything now after his heart attack scare.

I really, really hope this movie bombs like Solo. I think if they get two flops in a row they may get the message. At the least, they don’t get rewarded for their sins.

As a youtuber already posted. Kevin Smith cries at everything. He really does. He cried at Venom. Venom!

This means nothing... nothing.
