Ignoring the recruiting aspect, is Leach a top 3 coach?

yes i know recruiting is the most important part of being a CFB HC, so i'm not saying Leach is anywhere near Saban, Dabo, or Meyer. it even puts him well below guys like Fisher, Kirby, Harbaugh, etc

but in terms of just creating a philosophy, hiring coaching, developing players, creating gameplans, and calling games, how many guys are better? i'll still give Meyer and Saban the advantage (b/c they may be 2 of the 5 best HCs in history), but who else is better?

also, on a historical level, is Leach one of the most influential coaches in CFB history? certainly he's the most influential single coach of the modern era. his offense (i know it was Mumme's but Leach took it to a new level) is now the standard across CFB. when was the last time this sort of proliferation occurred?

He's easily one of the best coaches in America. In Wazzu's entire history, they had like 6 good seasons before he took over. In the 4 years before he took over, they combined for 9 wins. He's won 9 games twice, and is currently at 8-1 and ranked in the top 10. He's a beast.

Can the Art Briles / Gus offense be traced back to the Air Raid somehow? Because I'd argue that's the new standard in CFB, rather than the latter.

And maybe it can.

Leach is top 3 IMO, yes.

Definitely one of the most influential coaches on the game historically, but I don’t think he’s a top 3 game day coach. We’re a little swept up in this season forgetting he’s never had a major bowl win.

I’d take Gary Patterson before Mike Leach.

I think he is great at turning bad programs into consistent bowl teams but he has never been able to get over the hump. Very good coach that is bordering on elite but not top 3.

SFP, why don’t we ask SMS. I’m sure he’ll give us a valid answer

Off the top of my head I’d take Saban Urban Petersen and Patterson before him I think. But that’s probably it. I would say top 5

Is Saban even a good coach if he doesn’t have a roster full of 5* players?

I’d take him at Auburn.

Let him benefit from the SEC’s natural recruiting base and see what he can do.

Any Coach who recruits this guy to be his QB is a Top 3 coach.

This kinda got me thinking....his personality and antics aside, I wonder how Leach would do in NFL since he wouldn’t have to worry about recruiting and he’d have more talent to work with than ever before

Who said he can’t recruit?

You think Dabo and Meyer would get top 5 classes to Lubbock and fricking Pullman? Lol.

I think his recruiting skills have been greatly limited at the stops he's been a HC at. Lubbock and Pullman are horrible places to recruit to. MSU is a little better in that regard, so I am not sure how well you can judge him as a recruiter.

That said, talent-wise as a coach, he's easily top 5. He's put up prolific offenses at both his previous stops in P5 conferences and that was with built-in talent disadvantages.

His QB throws for over 600 yards...and he's asked what did you think of your quarterback...
And Leach says, "well I think it was a good start but he's got to improve on some things."

Welcome to Pac12 football in the SEC.

Ed O: "We couldn't cover their receivers." DB U? fricking SEC lets the Pirate in Conference...should've kept him out. First day, he blows up the SEC. Most passing yards in the history of the SEC. Ah, but Big12/Pac12 football would never work in the SEC.
