Muh not explicitly consenting to the social contract so it therefore should not apply to me. Internet libertarians argue this same shite.
While I do think it’s extreme, especially since they likely at least use something that their taxes pay for, at the same time I think the consequences of not complying even if they somehow were able to not use a single tax-payed resource, gives the argument a bit more credence.

I actually have a bigger issue with payroll taxes even if I get the full benefit, then income taxes, since unlike many things that taxes pay for, I could and do use my own income for the same thing and have a choice in how it’s used. It just doesn’t sit right that there is something intended for me personally and exclusively taken from my income, and I have no say in any of it, putting aside whether I could invest it better or not.

I used working at Starbucks as a metaphor for underemployment.

I get it, but that’s always the one used but I think the whole idea of it isn’t as prevalent as it seems.

Isn’t that just like anything and a part of life, whether relationships, work, where we live, parenthood, home ownership etc., reality isn’t easy to realize until it happens.

Of course, beyond just complaining like we all do and adapt to the reality, when they get into arguments like the OP then they still aren’t in reality.

That being said, I do think most people eventually realize that they better make a change because reality isn’t going to change for them:

True, and I certainly admire people who take the risks. I just don't like the whining when reality sets in for some.

Well, this person will have no problem with me walking in their home, eating their food, and walking out with a few possessions, I guess?

Meh lZ we all whine or do something that serves the same purpose; it’s just human nature.

It’s the whining, blaming someone else, and THEN (most importantly) not doing something about it that bothers me.

It’s just virtue signaling and political posturing and little about science, on either side, for the most part. Kind of like the OP.

Absolutism is best left to children and academics. The rest of us live in a world where what works matters.

Good in theory, but in practice, it seems like few can agree on what is working, much less what will work in the future. See e.g. The War on Drugs.

The reality is that the average person is rather stupid. As such, the average decisions of all the people put together will be rather stupid, as well. Any attempt at unfettered “pragmatism” without any guiding philosophy in the paradigm of a democratic republic is doomed to get us into the same kind of clusterfrick that we find ourselves in now.

People who have never done a minutes' honest work in their lives are pretty easy to spot.
I would bet if this young idiot were forced to pick up a hammer and work construction for a year, their opinion would change.

If they're not providing anything then you're an idiot for paying them $1600 a month.

My guess is they are providing you with something because you are paying them $1600 a month.

these anarchist-marxist types seem to either loathe the concept of investment or are completely ignorant to the reality of investing

i suppose it's not shocking that investment in infrastructure ends up being a huge loss for communist countries
