You think with all the technology we have with replay and getting calls right, that MLB could equip the umpires with a display seeing what we see when a ball is thrown across the plate. That way they would always call a ball a ball and a strike a strike.

It would ruin the nuance of the game. :eyeroll:

/sarcasm

They need to have a buzzer for the ump, he can only call a strike if he gets buzzed or the batter offers.

Umps still monitor outs, check swings, catches, balks, etc.

Just get rid of the frickin umpire.. if its in the box, a green light comes on

The only conceivable reason to actually have an umpire making judgement calls back there is that you want to be able to control the outcome

I’m in the minority here and take shite for it all the time, but I like the human error part of baseball. I don’t like replay and I definitely don’t want a computer calling pitches. I like when a bad call brings the skipper onto the field to kick dirt.

ETA: There was none better than Lou Pinella.

Why don’t we just have robots play the game?

I mean, why is human error allowed with the players themselves, but not the umpires?

The home plate umpire needs to be told what to call from New York.

No they wouldn't...they Union men, gotta show MLB they are independant who think outside the box.

A strike zone is a personality...it isn't just crossing some made up rectangle.

They are the bosses not newfangled technology.

Sarcasm aside. This isn't cyclops in tennis. Just because a pitch sneaks into a TV screen box doesn't mean it's automatically a strike...it's a little more nuanced than that.

I hate MLB umpires who think they walk on water...but being behind the plate and calling the entire game is different than a computer.

I mean, we still want the human equation in sports, right? It's played by humans. Strike zone wasn't defined by the Supreme Court or Fox sports...the strike zone isn't defined by millimeters like a sciene project...players have different bodies.

As long as the game is played by humans, it should be umped by humans.

If MLB does that, what's the point of even having umpires? Why not just let Pitchf/X or whatever technology they use call the games?

I like the human aspect of baseball. Some umpires call tight, some high, some low. I think it adds to baseball seeing players adjust.

I have no problem with tight or high strike zones as long as they are consistent for both teams.

Wouldn't it be more of a block rather than a box? There is volume in the batter's strike zone.

Can the ball cross into the zone over the plate at any time, or at least at the first corners and inly then, or maintain to the second corners?

how about putting "strikes" on all of the umpires, 3 missed calls and you are out and replaced, umpire also loses pay for that game, don't like it umpire? then work harder and pay more attention to your craft, fricking umpires...

At least baseball seems way closer to this than the NFL does with the ball crossing the goal line.

I’m still not sold on that box they put up, though. Some pitches that look clearly over the corner show up 2 inches outside and I’ve heard commentators say the box isn’t completely accurate.

They should also equip a hard pitch clock all the time. If you take more than 20 sec, batter is awarded a "ball". If the batter isn't ready, award a strike.

My issue with that is I don't think K-zone is 100% either, and the assumption of most is it is. Especially the top and bottom of the zone
