Do companies ever pay for interviewees to travel to an interview?

I have a job interview coming up that's 2.5 hours away. Job would include a significant pay increase and get me out of Baton Rouge, so I don't mind driving there to interview. I have heard of other places paying for interviewees to travel to an interview, but I'm sure that's rare. I guess it depends on the company, how many people are interviewing, and how far the applicant is.

Was kind of hoping I could do a Skype interview or something, but I guess I'd prefer an in-person interview anyway.

I know most of you OT ballers do all the hiring and firing. Do you ever pay for interviewees to travel to an interview?

I was reimbursed mileage and meals (no alcohol) for an interview a few years ago. I ended up not taking the job but was still reimbursed for my expenses to drive to the interview.

You want to be reimbursed $30 for gas? They'll take care of that. Go ahead and ask before you sit down.

I’ve never traveled to an interview where expenses weren’t paid for. Typically there’s a phone interview first as a form of weed out.

For a 2.5 hour drive, I wouldnt ask if they would pay for my expenses, but they will prob offer. Asking could come off as high maintenance and it’s not much of an expense to really make a push anyways.

FWIW, if I offered some kid an on site interview and he asked if he could Skype instead, I would cross him off the list pretty quick.

I had a company pay for a flight to go interview/spend the day at the company and reimbursed me for the Ubers from the airport to the company.

I think it shows the interest the company has if they are willing to pay to have you interview with them.

They'll probably pay their current mileage rate (approx. $0.50-0.60/mile) for you to drive there and back. At least they should. You can call your HR contact to confirm if you're worried about it.

And absolutely do it in person. Skype or phone interview is fine for an initial feeler interview, but if you're serious about the position, 5 hrs drive time is nothing.

Yes companies pay for travel... but if it's only a 2.5 hour drive, I would just pay or my own $30 in gas. I'd only ask if the travel required a plane ticket or major expense

I've seen some that do and some that don't. All of them have told me upfront.

The truck nuts weigh me down man. Burning a ton of fuel

Obviously I'm not going to bring it up. I was just curious if it's common or not. They sent me all the interview details and didn't say anything about it so I guess that's my answer. Maybe that means they've already crossed me off and they're just interviewing me to fill a quota. A family member got me the interview so maybe they think nepotism is payment enough.

Halliburton paid for me to go to Lafayette for a two day interview. Hotel, meals, travel costs.

If they don't pay for it, you don't want to work there

If flying, yes. If driving, no.

Also depends on what type of position/level of experience you have

I interviewed with Southwest right out of college and they flew me in and out from Dallas.

I wouldn't ask for it in your situation. But yes, it is normal to pay for flights, hotel rooms, etc.

Of course. They'll usually have you provide receipts (in your case, it might be some sort of evidence of distance traveled) and will mail you a check, regardless if you get the position. In other cases, if they're large and organized, they'll simply cover costs ahead of time.

I've never had one not paid for and typically hotel and meal the night before were provided.
