Leave BR City Park Golf Course Open

Every few years Rolfe McCollister of The Baton Rouge Business Report appeals to the public to support closing City Park golf course and turning it into an urban “Central Park“. Every few years his appeal loses steam.
He argues that the land is being “wasted” on a golf course and could be put to better use as an urban gathering place.
The problem with his argument is that City Park currently has plenty of green space that is not being used by the public. Why shut down Baton Rouge’s oldest golf course which is on the National Registry without first utilizing the available space for urban use?
City Park doesn’t pretend to be a top flight golf course but it is an excellent course for youngsters and beginners as well as seniors to enjoy the game of golf without being a hindrance they would be on one of the other courses in the area where the “serious minded “ golfers tend to play.
City Park Golf Course has been around since the 1920’s and it’s history and place in our community should be respected and supported instead of discarded.
Besides. I had my first hole in one at City Park. Got to be able to point out the spot to my great grand kids right?
Let City Park Golf Course be!

Agree. I love that course.
That is such a strange part of town. I feel safe when I’m there, but it’s super hood a block away. I’m surprised more golfers/tennis players/dog park visitors aren’t robbed.

Goat ranch, but love the old style 1920's courses.

I remember playing there when I was at LSU and there was one hole where you drive over a hill and can't see the ball land.
The local hood rat kids would wait in the woods, run out and steal the balls when they landed and then sell them to other golfers for $0.25 each.

BREC has a massive budget. Want to shut a course down? Go after Howell

That's some entrepreneurial spirit!

It's happened to me on #2. Hit one down the left side, dude jumped out from behind a tree, grabbed my ball, then tried to sell it back to me.

I’ve seen like 20 better golf courses today on the Quad.
It has all the charm of playing the Walt Disney World parking lots.
RA’ed Move to the Goff Board, laddies.

What areas are underutilized? The west side of Dalrymple is heavily programmed and sees a good crowd. Brooks Park is technically part of City Park, but no one goes over there because it's quite literally the other side of the tracks and you're likely to get mugged. Knock Knock took a good chunk.
The only non-programmed space I can think of would be just to the North of the tennis courts, and that's not a large area.
I've played that course more times than I can count, yet I'm firmly in the "it needs to go" camp.

This is more a community topic than a golf topic as they are trying to turn golf course into a public park.
Not appropriate topic for Golf Board

As City Park has developed, it is really becoming a recreational activity center with high traffic. The tennis facility improvement have been a tremendous success. The new croquet field next to the courts will offer something for children, seniors, or others enjoying a leisurely outdoor activity (particularly from the surrounding neighborhood. The dog park and revised play ground are always crowded, while the walking path and open areas encourage walking, jogging, exercise classes, etc. The golf course enables casual golf for beginners or people out for fun. These all seem to go hand in hand.
It would be somewhat disappointing if these were somehow realigned into a civic center park of sorts where people just hang out. The golf helps keep active, healthy people there on site through out the day. Tennis is busy at night. Any shady characters are greatly out-numbered by legitimate people. Turn this into simply a glorified gathering place, and I doubt the area stays as vibrant around the clock.

Oh how many times I hit the street

I can't remember, is it 18 holes or 9? Maybe cut it to 9, save on maintenance and use the other space as desired. Make both sides happy? Or turn it into a Par 3 / Executive course?
