There you go. Utilize Brooks Park as an urban central park. Develop it and make it safe before you turn City Park into what Brooks Park currently is do to lack of use.
Until you utilize Brooks Park the argument that you don’t have enough space doesn’t hold water.

A $10 green fee doesn't equate to good greens or conditions but it is affordable for beginners and hackers. Plus you can play it in less than 2 hours and it's right in the middle of the city.

I don't think it was always a space issue. I mean the course was getting such little play that they had to let the hipsters play on the course too with "foot golf".
I'll play it once or twice a year when I only have time for a quick 9 holes, but the course itself is terrible and only marginally improved following the renovations 10 or so years ago.

You are also forgetting they added foot golf to the course. Lots of young guys out there drinking beer kicking a soccer ball around.
I had one group clear out of my way while I made my approach shot on 7. As I struck the ball ball they yelled in unison, "Get in the Hole!!!!" and cheered rauchously for me as I landed very close to the pin.
I'd love for them to add disc golf to the course

The golf hardly keeps many people on site all thru the day. In 2017, there were just over 10,400 rounds played. That is an average of 28 rounds per day. More likely is that 70-80% of the rounds are on Fri-Sun, then that puts about 50 rounds per day on the weekends and around 13 per day during Mon-Thurs. Hardly the highest and best use for that large of an area. Could be turned into signature area for the City and lower maintenance cost in the long run.
My son (13) and I played there 2 weekends ago. Good for kids and beginners, sure, but so is Webb, Dumas, and Clark. I would much rather see a signature park type space there than the golf course.

Brooks Park is hindered from ever getting much traffic due to shitty access to the site. Unless you're on foot, you have to enter it from the west. It's essentially a dead-end.

That’s part of development needs of Brooks Park. Spend the money creating safe access instead of just letting all the green space go totally unused.

True, and saw a guy chase a hood rat down that did this and beat the crap out of him. Kid was like 12 years old.
We still talk about how funny that was. We knew the guy, and he had a short fuse...

OP is right. City Park has lots of green space that still sits there like decoration.

Was his name Rusty by chance? I had a similar experience with a guy named Rusty. Couple of kids from the hood were walking across the course and he chased them with his 3 iron yelling “ I don’t go walking across your basketball court when you’re playing!“

I play golf, Ive played many rounds at city park and its a colossal waste of space.. Close it with a master plan on what to do with the property, Use some of that 9 figure piggy bank that BREC is currently sitting on.. Make an amphitheater, add an Insectarium or something to work with the knock knock museum.. There are so many good ideas that could be put forth other than a run down golf course.

This is where you completely lost it. One JS Clark is THE goat pasture. It is flat and unimaginative. I love city park and consider it my home course because it doesn't get old playing there. Tee box on 4 is hitting over the train tracks to a green you can't see, 5 and 6 are par 3 over water. 7 has a high tee box location and hitting over a second hill. Ive had my first and only hole in one on 9.
JS Clark is straight, flat, boring, "let me get 9 holes in 30 minutes" golf
Dumas doesn't know how to keep the greens green. Once had absolutely no grass on the greens because someone used the wrong sprayer
And further, city park is huge with the retirement community. So yes there are more rounds played on the weekend, but I can promise the difference is not that severe.
Its so great going out on a day and playing 9 holes for $7 and walking the course.
Been playing there for 5 years and never had anyone steal my ball and try to sell it to me. Got enough I'd laugh at them and play a new ball.

You'd have to relocate a cemetery, do a few million in drainage work, or fight the railroad to gain vehicular access from Dalrymple. That gains you access to nine acres, whereas the golf course is 40 acres and it already has access.
And you know as as well as I know, fixing safety in that area is easier said than done. Old South ain't exactly being gentrified at a rapid rate.

Now you get into the issue of the affect on the neighborhood and the streets. The access to an urban Central Park at the present golf course would undoubtedly include cluttering up the surrounding neighborhood with cars and undesirable foot traffic creating a convenient crime opportunity.

There you have it. Old people with money like it and don't want to see change. Typical impediments to progress in Baton Rouge.
All the BREC courses except Beaver Creek and Santa Maria are terrible. Just because City Park has a couple holes that go up and down a 30' hill doesn't make it a good course. I don't care how you skew the numbers. Call it 60/40 weekend to weekday, which is 40 rounds/day and 20 rounds/day. If you have a course in the middle of a city getting only 40-50 rounds/day on a weekend and 10-20 rounds a day on a weekday, then that course is terrible.
