Quarterback: B+. Burrow looked a little rushed early on, but after settling down he showed the poise and leadership most of us expected. I only really question a couple of decisions he made all night. The staff to allowing a transfer to audible at the line of scrimmage against a defense like Miami the first game of the season tells me that they have a lot of confidence in this young man. Something not noticed by many were his throwaways. While not exciting, they were a great example of how this guy knows how to NOT screw up.

Runningback: A. This is arguably the most pleasant surprise. WTH did Brossette have to eat before the game? The young man ran like a beast, and he certainly looks more than capable of continuing the strong LSU tradition of stuffing the football down your throat. CEH looked like a nice change of pace back, and I fully expect to see a few big plays out of him this year. Both showed they're more than capable of seeing the field and making fast breaks towards daylight. No fumbles against a ball hawking defense definitely pushed this unit up to an A grade.

Wide Receiver and TE: C+. There is room for improvement here, but I think they definitely proved they have the athleticism to become an offensive strength. Route running looked sharp at times - Jefferson in particular, but this is an area that can improve. Obviously, they could use some more practice actually catching, especially in traffic. Given the fact they were going up against a pretty good Miami defensive backfield though, I was content with their performance. Chase is a future 1st rounder. The dude has the "IT" factor. Foster Moreau was wide open in the back of the end zone on one occasion, but JB failed to see him. I'd have loved to had seen that play made. It'd have been a thing of beauty. This will be corrected in the film room.

Offensive Line: B-. Other than GW living in our backfield, our line held up much better than the nega-Tigers predicted. There's much to clean up here, but at times the execution of our offensive line was stunning. The 50 yard run was a thing of beauty and a RB's dream hole. It must have looked like a Brazilian bikini model opening her legs to Brossette, and he took it right to the bitch. Charles looked like a bull in a China shop on several plays. Hopefully Magee is back soon.

Overall Offensive Grade: B

Linebackers: A+. They're were a couple of plays where they over pursued the runner, but I'm not holding this against them for wanting blood in week 1. This unit was impeccable and set the tone for the entire night. Devin White was an absolute beast and brought the swagger of the four horsemen of the apocalypse with him. This unit struck fear in the hearts of the "U" players and made them look like cowering little girls all night long. This may very well be the best group of linebackers I've ever seen at LSU, and if Chaisson comes back 100%, the rest of the SEC has been put on notice. Nobody is pushing us around with these guys healthy. Show me a hands down better corps of LBs in the country, and I'll take a season long ban. If Aranda was Satan, these guys are definitely his death squad of fallen angels.

Defensive Line: A. This crew made Miami's offensive line pay for showing up all night long. Other than several occasions where it appeared they shot through the wrong gap and took bad angles at Rosier, they played fearless and had nothing in mind but destroying the Miami backfield. Fehoko looks to be everything they claimed he was in practice. I thoroughly enjoyed watching our line throw Canes around like rag dolls.

Defensive Backs: B. They had a solid A until the 4th quarter, but all of the problems are correctable. Greedy's name wasn't heard much, but that's a good thing. Fulton looks like the real deal. He just needs to clean up his pass interference. That one drive just looked like a fluke though. We've got a pair of shutdown corners. Opposing OCs that enjoy passing are going to hate us. Our safeties looked very solid until the 4th. Again, I chalk the 4th up to a fluke. They just need to watch more film and fix the angles their taking to the ball. Delpit played very well, and Battle got a pick. I have absolutely no worries about DBU maintaining this reputation at all. We had some freshmen mistakes, but that's to be expected. They're going to make a lot of QBs consider other sports this season.

Overall Defensive Grade: A

Special Teams: A+. Cole Tracy is a beast and showed exactly why Orgeron gave him a scholarship. His addition will win us a few games this year.

Coaching Staff: B. That 1st quarter was looking like a shite-show, but I was pleasantly surprised with the adjustments made after the 3rd time out. I personally enjoyed watching Ensminger's game plan unfold and feel like we have the talent for the power spread look he was giving us. Did we get conservative? Yes. We also built a 30 point lead against the #8 team in the country. I don't blame them for getting "boring" in the second half. Aranda was Aranda. Enough said. The man might be the best DC in football today. Coach O seemed very full of fire on the sideline, and he exhumed extreme confidence in our offense by going for it on 4th down on a couple of occasions when the game was still close. Calls like that send messages to your players, and they ultimately build swagger. We built quite a bit of it in front of a TV audience of over 8,000,000. LS manhandled Miami and took our "U" back without a problem, then we handed them the "L" to play with for a week.

Many of us laughed, but it looks like O wasn't bullshitting when he said "We comin'".

Overall Grade: B+

I think you are being too kind..... don't get me wrong, cuz I'm so darn proud we won.... but,

QB - B, will get better

RB - B, but way better than expected

WR - D, too many drops (and a couple of near fumbles) worse than expected

OL - B, lot of missed assignments, but far better than expected

LB - A+

DL - A

DB - C, there was some disappointment here, but will likely make the adjustments

ST - A++++

Coaches - A-

I think your grades at QB, OL and Coaching are a bit too nice.

JB didn’t have time to make play to Moreau. He barely got it out to Carter area.

No way you can give WRs that low compared to your other unit grades. Two drops on night, but these guys got open with really good route running. Protection from O line hurt their chances to make a better impact.

QB: B+ kept plays alive as well as he could, only 2 really poor throws. Ran for a first down and ran close enough for us to go for 4th and 1 early in game. Audible and reading defense pre snap was very good.

RB: B, Brossette read blocks well and Edwards Helaire ran inside well. Not all on them, but we converted no 3rd downs running with any of our rbs. However, we converted two on 4th. Our screen game is still terrible...all parties responsible.

WR: B-, they weren’t asked to do much, but got open all game and helped convert two long 3rd downs. They chipped in down field on blocking pretty well. Protection hurt their potential impact.

Oline: C, I think that’s fair. Too much pressure on Joe and struggled on short yardage runs. They did a really good job on 1st down runs and seemed to be organized and played a pretty clean game.

LBs: B+, really solid putting pressure on Miami and finishing most tackles. Would be an A if they could have finished more of their opportunities in backfield. Very few missed assignments, had the defense playing together.

Dline: B, rotated a lot of guys in and all guys absorbed blocks and allowed lbs and safeties to fly around. Not great pressure when there were some opportunities, but they played their gaps well.

DBs: C-, Great when asked to come in and blitz, but bad in coverage all night. So many missed opportunities on interceptions and completely lost and unorganized covering the deep ball. Delpit was an A, and Greedy played well, but others did not put a complete game together. Maybe it’s a harsh grade, but I feel like the dbs had opportunities to finish the game off and couldn’t do it. I know a lot of new faces...everyone has their good and bad moments. We lost every 50/50 ball.

Special teams: A+, punting can improve. The rest was great. No more squib kicks.

Overall: B, we did most things really well. We played disciplined and controlled the game.

I wonder what grades you would give if you saw film. but since we are giving them based on what we saw in real time I think you are being too harsh on our WR's giving them a C+. OK, we had a couple of drops but for the most part we got open all night and that is the first time I've seen that (and a QB that could find one) in a while. I gotta give them at least a B+. And how you give Burrow less than an A befuddles me; he was damn good last night.

You rated TE's a C+. they rarely ran a route last night because they were obviously needed for blocking. Miami's DL, esp Willis was quick as cats and gave our OL fits.

Lastly, while I think White played fairly well it was Phillips that was the beast last night. He was everywhere.

Lastly, we have to learn how to sack a QB! it seemed the first place we go for is the face mask.

I am encouraged by what I saw last night overall. We should be competitive in every game we play, esp if our OL improves some.

I was a little disappointed in the interior DL’s pass rush, to be honest.

frick no. To slow getting plays in early & Play calling in the second half was atrocious

I’d say C- for staff

Pretty much agree with everything except

quote:

Coaching Staff: B

The conservative Offense has got to end even with a big lead. The two runs and a pass on 3rd and 8 has got to stop. Felt like Les miles was calling the plays in the 2nd half last night. 3 for 16 on third down is not good play calling. Steve E. needs to throw more screens and get the TE involved. Everything else was good.

Disagree with only these two.

O-Line = C (I wasn't impressed by their performance - running push was too sporadic and Miami got a major push on the pass rush).

Defensive Backs = C (this group is held to a much higher standard than some of that ticky tack b.s they gave up)

Joe was pressured all night

We ran for 3.8 a carry

Which includes a 50 yard run.

2 sacks and 8 tackles for loss.

O line needs to improve.
