re: What's behind racial differences in restaurant tipping?

quote:I fail to see how it's their responsibility to order more food or drinks than they want so that the server can get paid more. The seafood platter is massive and is like $70 or something like that.
The bigger point is that a group of 7 people held up a table for 8 people at a super busy restaurant for an hour and only ordered one entree and no drinks. Server should’ve made 50 or 60 dollars and probably made 15

I have an Ethiopian friend who serves at Cheesecake factory in ATL, she said they sometimes separately equally distribute black customers among the servers to equally divide out the shitty tips. Rather than just assign that table to the next server up
My wife used to be a server back in college. She said the restaurant had a policy where they would automatically add gratuity with parties of 8 or more. (as most places do) Black people would come in, in huge parties but ask to be split up into multiple tables just to avoid the mandatory tip.

3) the Washington Post thinks that they tip less because they simply haven't been told they should tip more (than sometimes nothing at all)
while we have their attention, can we also let them know how to use to left and right lanes on the interstate?

In South Florida and many other places where service industry jobs are considered real jobs and this is what people do full time the option to grat anyone is up to the server. Anyone who has been to Miami has prolly noticed this.
I was wearing something LSU once and a Polish guy and his Hungarian co-worker asked me what LSU meant. I explained it was a school and where it was. Laughing about it with me, they said they just auto-grat anyone wearing it now because of past experiences.

It’s ingrained at this point. I read, a while back, that when a restaurant tried this it failed badly bc people didn’t like the price increase and missed the ability to tip. I think a lot of customers like having that tip power over the server.
No I would say its because people would rather pay $100 for a meal and tip $20 if service was good. Instead of paying $120 for the meal and receive shite service or good service and have no ability to adjust based off how good or bad the service was. I don't want to pay someone more for doing a terrible job.

i've heard of this before. this kind of behavior negates the "they don't understand" argument

Same reason some black folks won’t give you the left lane. Entitlement.

My wife and I see the whole "this is not prepared correctly" shite ALL the time in Atlanta. People treat it like they're bargaining for a lower cable rate.
The wait staff know exactly what's happening and it's obvious they just go through the motions on it. It's obnoxious. You can easily tell when someone has a legit complaint and when they're just playing the game to get comped something.

As a manager, I can't tell you how many times I had to go to a table because they complained about the food to find out they are just attempting to get it for free....they wouldn't

We really probably see it once a month or more. I've never worked in a restaurant but it still drives me insane.

It was always a pain in the arse because there were times you could call it was going to happen before they even ordered. Now this is a thing that doesn't matter of race. People of all races attempt it. Now, some are worse than others but mostly just comes down to people being cheap.

Entitled self absorbed people don't tip well regardless of race.

There is definitely a profile here but I would suspect that it may broaden out elsewhere. What always gets me is that it's so often a couple that looks like they're out on a date, and yet it's so blatant. Makes me wonder if it's an established strategy or if they discuss doing it ahead of time.

In my experience waiting table blacks do get worse service and yes it’s because they tip horribly on average. They also tend to be harder tables to wait as well. If you bring out four plates at least one will be sent back for some reason. Whites are guilty of this shite too but in general. Blacks also don’t like to wait on black tables for the same reason.

Facts. My wife used to be a waitress, no pics, and she said black customers were usually more demanding for service but often tipped less.
