I'm interested to know you can use your shoulder to hit and not get your head somewhat involved?

Looked like a textbook tackle to me and a bad luck injury.

The key to fixing football is weight limits on players, less kinetic energy, less impact on the body. Hampering the defense has hurt football.

You can blame the players for this nonsense.

The NFL, as a business, has to do this shite because all the old timers are whining and moaning about head injuries. It's a money grab by retired players and the NFL is simply defending itself pro-actively by instituting rules like this.

pretty simple.

the NFL expects everyone to understand everything on the fly now.

either you do or you don't.

what that is may be unclear but that's just how it is.

This is what Roger asked for.

And it will only get worse until enough people stop watching that it hurts the bottom line.

The NFL really gives zero fricks about what regular fans think.

Link not working but he went straight at Lee's knees. I can see alot of career ending knee injuries during this yesr.

I don’t know if he was targeting his knee, that makes it sound intentional.

He definitely went low at his legs. But since straight up form tackling (the safest way to tackle) is now illegal this is what you get.

Enjoy it for what it is?

It’s overofficiated to the point that it’s almost unwatchable. Not much to enjoy.

Now every decent play, I don’t get excited, I just look for the flag. And almost every time it’s there. That’s not fun to watch.

Is that really the product the nfl wants to sell?

Just like the rules make it that nobody really knows what a “catch” is, the rules now make it that nobody knows what a clean tackle is anymore.

That's probably what the NFL wants. They're not going to get sued for knee injuries.

They threw a flag on the defender on the play.

The rule (or some version of it) is here to stay. The NFL's primary goal is to protect themselves from lawsuits. Safety issues have come to the forefront but they have gone way overboard.

The NFL now has a target on its back. The target is Exposure to Legal Liability. It is a big target, so big that it could conceivably END the NFL. This is an existential threat to the NFL.

As such, the NFL is struggling hard to find a way to reduce the size of this target. They are taking desperate measures, such as this "helmet rule".

I'd like to hear some ideas on what YOU would do to reduce the size of this target, if you were NFL Commish.

I sure don't know what I would do! Players are so big and fast these days, I can't think of any way to reduce the size of this target, other than to make new rules that definitely nerf the hitting, blocking and tackling part of the game -- and we all know that these kinds of changes fundamentally change the nature of the game.

I’m surprised they haven’t moved to those huge helmets with more padding. I would think that would be rolled out in the near future.

The big Wes Walker helmets for everyone.

I think you hit the nail on the head. If technology can develop a helmet that absorbs the damaging kinetic energy forces produced by football, our beloved game will be saved, and that's no overstatement.

As far as I know, the only research group that has made some significant strides to that end is the Bofa Group, Sacksville, NY.

They've called quite a few of these penalties as well.

For decades players wore no helmets or leather helmets that offered no protection. They learned how to tackle without using their heads. The helmet as a weapon is not an integral part of the game.
