Leave it running in this case.

The chance of static electricity is no greater.

I leave it running, get out and insert the nozzle into the tank, engage the automatic gas pump handle holder then walk in the store to buy my beer, meat pies or whatever. Walk out, remove the pump handle from my now full gas tank, hop in and drive off.

When you are releasing a whole shitload of flammable vapors around your car, I think it only makes sense to get rid of the obvious ignition sources while doing so.

What's the ignition source?

I’ve left my vehicles running everytime I’ve filled up for the last 10 years.

How is that different than starting your car 1 second later or the car next to you starting up?

I don't think you are able to start your car 1 second after you stop pumping....20 or 30 seconds at a minimum, which is long enough for any vapors to dissipate.

Don't get me wrong, I am a firm supporter of natural selection...the herd needs to be culled and I think people who make such decisions are a pretty good place to start.

I think if it were a real risk they would actually make an effort to stop people from doing so.

It's kind of like when they tell you to put your phone on airplane mode during takeoff. If it actually mattered they wouldn't be using the honor code.

What about the car that is done pumping gas right next to you that is now sitting there with its engine on? Or the many cars that drive by you while you pump gas? OMG we're all gonna die!!!!!?!?!!?!

Static electricity is the greater chance, realistically the only chance and rare.

What about the guy pulling up next to you at the same time you filling up?

Ignition sources would be anything electronic in your vehicle as well as the internal combustion engine itself.

If I’m the only one around I leave it running, if I have someone next to me filling up I turn it off.
If I have dogs or kids I leave it running- it also depends on outside temperature- I try not to make it too complicated

You seen that myth busters where they couldn’t make it explode?

Vehicles don't backfire like they used too. With the modern exhaust systems, there is really no danger of explosion. It's might drive away because you forgot to engage the brake or shift into park.

That is an obvious danger as well...but that is not what the OP asked.

Do you think you evenncome close to the possible LEL while pumping?

No to mention internal combustion engines don't work that way.
