Static electricity is the greater chance, realistically the only chance and rare.
And that is solved by grounding yourself before introducing the nozzle.

running cars exploding while re-fueling is like gang members riding around with their lights off and murdering people who flash their lights at them. pure urban legend
If this was a problem wouldn't we see stock cars and indy cars exploding all the time during races?

I have always turned the car off even though I wasn’t sure why.
This thread is a game changer for me.

The only danger in leaving your car running while re-fueling is: Car being stolen or locking keys inside.

Do you think you evenncome close to the possible LEL while pumping?
sure...if I remember right, the LEL of gasoline vapors is only a couple of percent. You exceed that every single time you pump gas. I would say that anytime you smell gasoline, you are above the LEL.

No. Diesel.
Yes. Gasoline.
Yes. Gasoline.

Do you turn off your vehicle when filling up?
Cops don't so...

been driving for 9.5 years, never turned truck off.

I've left it on for every vehicle I've owned, and I'm still not blown up
Posted on 8/25/18 at 12:45 pm to Lsuhack1
No. I don’t turn it off. The people in this thread who think that your car is going to blow up are retarded

get blown up? How?
Not sure if serious
Pretty sure he is. Go ahead and tell us how. FYI, they fuel up helicopters while running and while your fueling up your car, other cars can roll right past you or pull up behind you, their running engine closer to you fill spout than your own engine.
You biggest concern is static electricity, whether you engine is running or not.

The level of stupidity here is mind numbing

Funny story. Around 5 years ago i had just bought a new Truck. About a week after I bought it I stopped to get gas and left it running. Well, either i got screwed by the auto lock feature or I hit the lock button as i was opening and closing the door because after i filled up i realized the Truck was completely locked while running with my phone inside.
The wife was out of town and she had the only spare key. I could have had someone else look up the number for pop a lock and had them do it for me, but i knew that it could take an hour or longer for them to come out and i didn't feel like waiting that long. So i grabbed the lug-nut wrench from the tool box (which thankfully had a nice flat piece on the end) and a crescent wrench to take off the antenna.
It took me a half an hour, but i was able to pry the door open enough to get the antenna to the door lock button. It should have take 5 minutes tops, but my aim was shite and i half-assed it with prying the door open far enough because i was afraid of breaking or bending something. Once i stopped caring and applied the right force it went pretty quickly.
As soon as i got back in the Truck i messed with the auto- lock feature and set it to "unlock at vehicle stop". I haven't had that problem since. There have been times where i have accidentally locked the driver door, but all the other locks were unlocked.

I heard that it would mess with your gas gauge when I was little. Don't remember the reasoning but that was the story.

I leave the car on when I have my baby with me
That gas explosion thing is a myth as long as there is not gas puddles and cigarettes being lighter then no worries

I smoke and put gas in all the time. No reason not to.

I’ve never turned it off to fill up. Why would I?
