This despite Marvel Studios practically begging their bosses to reverse their original decision.

quote:

Disney is holding firm on its decision to fire director James Gunn from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Gunn met with The Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn yesterday, but the filmmaker will not return to the franchise he helped launch. According to Variety, Marvel Studios supports Disney’s final decision.

Gunn was given the courtesy of making his case and the meeting was described as “civil and professional,” but Horn did not change his mind about severing Disney’s relationship with the director. Disney does plan, however, to retain Gunn’s script for GotG Vol. 3.

The potential rehiring of Gunn was always a longshot. It’s no surprise that Disney stands by its decision. Contrary to reports that Marvel Studios was gently pushing for Gunn’s reinstatement, however, Marvel boss Kevin Feige reportedly supports the call Disney has made.

This will not end well. Hopefully it doesn't ruin what they have going. They should just go ahead and bring in Taika Waititi now.

Personally, I really dont care that the pedo is gone. GOTG 2 was a big drop off from the original anyway.

As long as they use Gunn's script, I'm confident in Marvel's ability to get a good director and the cast's ability to put it together with little-to-no dropoff.

So I assume Kennedy and Johnson are next for molesting Star Wars?

I think the tweets were passable ultimately, but then those weird party pics came out too....just not a good look publicly whether or not he's just "pushing boundaries."

Feige backing DIsney could be strange. Not sure if that's to stay in their good graces, or if he really does agree. Gunn was primed to take over the cosmic side and run with the tone moving forward.

I have a feeling they might go back to Shane Black. But if not him, my first call is to McQuarrie.

I'd only bring in Waititi if Thor is joining the Guardians. Other than that, let him make Thor 4.

They shouldn't rehire him. Knee jerk reaction to the mob mentality led to his firing. Knee jerk reaction to the mob mentality doesn't need to lead to his coming back.

So I guess that means they're going to be recasting Drax soon, huh.

It's a tough look for Disney. Marvel makes money, but it's just too easy for more dirty jokes/weird party pics to come out and really mess with the Mouse.

In the long run, it is the only decision Disney can make.

Despite what some people think, Gunn doesn't own GotG, nor the Marvel Universe. He is paid help. And just like all paid help, if you are found to have done things that do not align with the company image, you can and will be fired.

Time to move on and find the best person available.
