I get along well with my neighbor and in principle have no problem with this but

1. I wish he would simply ask me. Of course I would say yes.
2. It seems to be really smelly crap hes putting in there. Maybe all his trash is particularly nasty but seems like its always smells like fish guts or something similar.

Should I take it like a bitch and do nothing, confront him, light a bag of shite on his front door or nark to the HOA?

Just ask him its its really bothering you.

I have put bags in my neighbors trash cans (when its trash day on the street) when my can was too full to hold anything else.

This is weird. On the one hand, who cares, it's garbage. On the other hand, it would annoy me too.

I'm a big fan of passive aggressive responses. I would watch whenever he leaves, and dump everything in your trashcan into his trashcan, and not say a word.

He's getting rid of evidence and framing you for it.

Is it affecting your ability to throw your trash away?

If not, not sure why you actually care.

Option 1) Don't say anything if it's not an issue. Feel free to use his trashcan whenever you want.

Option 2) Say something about an issue that isn't really an issue and make it awkward

Of course I do. If I had someone on video doing that I would upload it to youtube and next time I see him say, "hey take a look at this and tell me what you think"

We have a problem in my neighborhood of people leaving their trash cans out all week, or at least a few days after trash day.

I drop my dog's poop bag in the closest one that's been left out each day. They deserve it, and hopefully, the rotten stench will encourage them to retrieve their trashcan sooner.

If you keep your bin in your garage and he is putting smelly stuff in there, I'd simply tell him you don't care if he does it but to please double bag it and let you know so you can be prepared. No reason to be a jerk about it, but I wouldn't let him just do it without politely telling him to ask you first.

I dump stuff in my neighbors occasionally, I used to throw bags of dog crap from the current walk in random people's bins if I walked my dog and it was trash day. I just haven't in a while.

I like this type of option. Just dump shite back in his can. Turnabout is fair play.
