What has changed is the direct state funding to LSU (not TOPS)
Just for some perspective as to how much the legislature has cut funding from LSU BR alone:
LSU Total State Funds (2008-2009): $239,689,737
LSU Total State Funds (2017-2018): $128,728,129
Total reduction of State Funds since 08-09: $110,961,608

It certainly matters considering that TOPS only covers tuition and has for a long time. That's how they can say that TOPS is fully funded even though it still costs an extra $2k out of pocket to enroll.
Exactly correct!

That's gone up over two fold in the past 15 years.

$1,024 semester in fall 1992.....

So the "tuition" didn't go above 6k. Tuition is around 4K for a full time student. Fees are 2K. LSU has to add in fees because it takes an act of congress to change the tuition.
He wanted the commuter meal plan because he can eat at more places, including the Magnolia Room, and instead of a set number of swipes per week, it's a total for the whole semester, so he has more leeway from week to week. If he was in a traditional residence hall (dorm) he wouldn't have had that option but the on-campus apartments are treated differently. THat does not include books and supplies, obviously.
Tuition $4,023.30
Academic Excellence Fee $245.00
Building Use Fee $48.00
Residential Housing $3,935.00
Operational Fee $80.00
Required Activity Fees $637.70
Registration Fee $10.00
Student Excellence Fee $857.00
Technology Fee $75.00
Tiger Lite Meal plan $1,933.00
Motor Vehicle Regis Fee $165.00
Total $11,759.00

It’s easy. Govt got involved and gave “free tuition”, and lending. Making college available to everyone makes it exponentially more expensive.

Wow
So over 8 semesters you are looking at nearly $100k?!?

I’d be fine with the raise in tuition if they’d also raise the minimum standards to get in.
They have risen steadily, and likely will continue to do so.
btw, LSU is very competitive cost-wise when compared to other flagships. LSU's administrative expenditures are on the lower end of the scale... I've seen some numbers on that and will try to find it.
It just costs a lot of fricking money to run a major university. It's not like the 80s when a pulse would get you in the door, and the buildings and amenities were out of the Flintstones. Colleges have to compete for students nowadays. Given that LSU has the largest entering freshman class IN HISTORY, I would say they are doing ok. My youngest will be in that number.

But wait a minute, i though we have seen articles on her saying how tuition is like $400,000 for a college degree now.
$6100 for a semester doesn’t add up to $400,000
$6100 for a semester doesn’t add up to $400,000

That's about $3,000 less than the average tuition for a public university.

Are books still expensive as frick?

What’s odd about politics, is that neither side of the aisle talks about this. Seems like it’s going to continue to exponentially rise and no on seems to care, aside from those attending college.

$690.00 per semester in 1985
Posted on 8/1/18 at 5:41 pm to Schmelly
That’s high for Louisiana.
Given the scale and competitiveness of LSU, I think it’s still a huge bargain. I do think they still could do more to trim the fat and reduce costs to students.
There is tremendous bloat in higher ed all over.

Yep. My jaw dropped at the price today. Bunch of overpaid professors teaching nonsense, unless your targeting a degree that requires it(accounting, medicine, law, etc.) As a mid level manager in business for almost 25 years, I'd recommend not going to college unless you need that degree. You can learn on the job and still get ahead.

Holy shite, on par with UT-A and not a premier 4-year
If by UT-A you mean the University of Texas at Austin, and not Arlington, then no it's not on par. UT is at $10,000 per semester, same as TAMU.
Now if you do mean UT-Arlington then it is on par.

LSU now exceeds in state tuition at UConn in 1999. The reality is, every other legitimate state school eclipsed the current tuition decades ago, and LSU could double or triple tuition and it would still be less than current out of state tuition anywhere else. (And that’s not factoring TOPS).

LSU is still much, much more affordable than its peer institutions - and all of its “in state” students have a substantial portion of that tuition covered because of TOPs.
Since it’s easier to get TOPs than to get into LSU and TOPs covers most of the tuition bill, students are mostly covering fees, housing, and books.
With that in mind, LSU is dirt cheap and an amazing value. They could add another $2500 in fees and still be a great value.
However, now that they’ve hiked tuition again, they’d better show continued progress in the rankings and quality.
