Anyone know the best place to purchase some 8" X 8" or 10" X 10" 12 ft. lengths of Oak or Cypress beams/posts?
Looking to make a Pergola in the back yard.
I live in Gonzales but willing to travel to get good quality material.

I bought 6x6 and 12x12 cypress beams for my house I’m building from Jones & Jones Cypress in batchelor. Great people to work with and best prices among the BR area.

White oak would be ok to use. Red oak sucks outdoors. That said, white oak is really heavy and would suck to work with a beam of that size. Cypress would be much easier to manhandle. If you lived closer to Opelousas I could point you in a couple of directions but that would be quite the drive for you.

I second that recommendation. I've bought a couple thousand dollars of cypress from them over the years. They have good prices, good product and a small operation of father and son running a mill, kiln and storage facility on their property about 25 miles south of Marksville, La. off La.1

Jones and Jones.
Cypress Depot is also an option. Never bought from them so can’t comment on quality/people, but their prices are similar to Jones and Jones (which are close to best around). Best part of Cypress Depot is their price list is posted online.

Wet cypress (which all beams this large will be wet) is heavy as shite. I trimmed my 12”x12” beam before hanging and when I trimmed it with the chainsaw, water was flying from the wood. This was 1 month after being milled.

Cypress Depot lists their 12 x 12 cypress beams at 72 lbs. per ft. and they mill them up to 20 ft. long. So that's 1440 lbs. per beam. Not something the average DIY guy can handle without some heavy equipment--------or a hell of a lot of friends.

Higgins on HWY 22 in Maurepas. Coming from Head of Island it will be right before where Val’s Marina was. Bought my front porch header beams and columns from him. Has some fine wood floors also.

I put up a 12”x12”x20’ beam on 7ft brick columns in my living room/kitchen. It was tough

If you’re looking for antique or reclaimed beams, Antique Woods of LA in Sunset has a great selection. For new cypress, I get them from Cypress Depot in Port Barre. I just changed out my front and back porch post with 10x10 cypress from Cypress Depot. Sumbitches are heavy.

Check out simply southern cypress on Facebook. I found them when I was building my house. I bought 6 8"x8"x10'
3 6"x12"x22'
4 12"x12"x12'
5 6"x6"x8'
And I got a 6ft pecky cypress mantle all for around 3500.

Burn it were it stands. Having it sawed up, you will loose more then 50% of the lumber due to splits, heavy checking and big time twist. I sawed up a nice one and ended up burning it all. It's hell on blades. They call it the

That is why one buys kiln dried beams. Besides that, a 12"x12"x8' beam will take about 5 years to air dry. That wet beam will shrink about 3/8's of a inch over the years on all 4 sides.

The fellow in Washington with that field full of wood? I'd like to know where he finds all that stuff.

Netterville's Lumber in Woovull is an excellent company to call.
