Turkey Day 5 miler was ok. Did not feel great and messed up my Strava obsessively checking my pace, cutting it off with over a mile left. Finished about a minute slower than last year, 7:40 pace. First time I had raced since January. I think it is time for something longer.

Just glad to be beating you on pace even if I’m a down week for you.

Going to go run my old Cross Country trails tomorrow morning while home visiting my folks hopefully.

Grew up in West Texas doing most of our training runs in cotton fields and 2 lane country roads in the middle of nowhere.

That sounds awesome 3; enjoy it dude.

Jay - Maybe we can hook up for a 10K early 2020. Doubt I’ll do anything much longer this Spring. And that’s hilarious about you saying f-it and stopping your watch.

Jogged 1.25 yesterday after my “power running” PT session. Not that I’m concerned with pace or distance at all, but finished at 9:12. Felt OK physically; mentally will take much more work, as will the lungs. I’ll be incorporating more bike/elliptical until I’m completely healed, low impact on the neck.

Didn’t happen. Got blasted with friends from college instead and went to bed at 1.

I’ll be damned. I just realized that these posts date back to July of 2018. Has anyone
actually run a marathon?

Had a really crappy 14 today. Didn’t feel good from the start. Felt heavy, legs were tired, under hydrated, etc. I think the rating since Thursday got to me. Seven weeks to go and planning to get in a 18, 20, and 23 before then.

Kballa6,

Is the 23 more mental or physical for you?

I have 18, 19 & 20 left but my neighbor and I worry about not going over 20. We are both injury free and have considered adding 3 to that final run.

Just physical. I did 23 during my last plan and want to do it again. All of my longer runs are trending faster (minus today). I want to see if I can continue that pace.

I ran the 20 and 23 last plan just to survive. Now that I know I can survive a full 26.2, I want to train harder and faster.

Thanks for the help & feedback..

I think I might trust the plan, stay at 20, and see how January goes.

Either way, my next race will be a more advanced Higdon plan or Hanson's so the issue of +/- 20 will be taken care of.

I would love to try the Hanson plan. I just can’t find enough time to do some of the mid week distances. I can only wake up so early and with work/family the afternoon just doesn’t work.

I am 2 weeks out from my first half marathon and have done all of the training thus far without following a plan. I vary my workouts a good bit and have made tremendous improvements over the last year. That said I’d like a little advice on what I should do over the next couple of weeks to try and make sure I’m as ready as can be.

The past month hasn’t been as I had planned as I’ve had to scale back intensity and mileage to nurse my hamstring.

You should still be putting in good miles (assuming you are healthy now). What has your weekly mileage been? What are your goals for the half, time based or just to finish?

My weekly mileage since the middle of September has been 35+ topping out at 40 miles about the time my hamstring started bothering me. Each week since then I’ve been dropping miles only managing 28 this week, with nothing longer than 6 miles.

The hamstring is improving but not completely better. I’d say 85-90%.

After yesterday’s run, i think I’d be comfortable going 10+ in a run but I’m also leery of pushing it too soon and having a setback.

My initial goal was 1:40 or better.

I am trying to get into running after not really ever doing it since being a kid. Ran my first 5k last week and came in at 33:25. I was just glad to finish it running and decided to try to finish the year off with a better time. Got another one Dec 14 and I am just looking to improve the time with each one I run from here on out. Just wanted to share and start getting in on the conversation here.

Welcome, dentist. The best thing about running is that your hard work will yield tangible results rather quickly, especially as you start out.

Got a work trip to Raleigh, NC and looking forward to hitting some unpaved trails. If anyone has a recommendation let me know.

Speaking of trails.. The event I am running has a 5K Trail option along with 5K Road. I was looking at the times from last year and they are nearly double what I saw on the road results. I am sure the elevation changes play a role but would trail runs in generally flat areas add 5 minutes to mile times?? I was thinking about trying it but geez.

Depends on the trail of course but it can slow you down a good bit. Climb is the great decider.

On the road I’m normally a 7:45 - 8:30 pace runner. On trails I very rarely go faster than 9 and I consider myself a pretty decent trail runner.

And welcome!

After today's 5 I only have 98 training miles + 2 week taper before my 1st full.

I need to make a strong effort on form, pace, and not waste any training days.

I also need to realize not to over train or break myself , I'm not going to turn into a good runner in a month.

Just trust the plan, trust the process, enjoy it ..and lose some more weight.
