If you are aiming for the barn, you might miss the barn. If you are aiming for the door on the barn, you will hit the barn.

If you want to hit a target, don't aim at the entire target. Pick a small point to hit. When firing a gun at a person, you aim center chest... don't just look at the person.

Aim precisely, so when you miss you still hit the larger target.

I always thought it was sort of dumb too, TBH

Step 2

“I do not aim with my hand; he who aims with his hand has forgotten the face of his father.
I aim with my eye.

I do not shoot with my hand; he who shoots with his hand has forgotten the face of his father.
I shoot with my mind.

I do not kill with my gun; he who kills with his gun has forgotten the face of his father.
I kill with my heart.”

As everyone else said; you aim for the man and miss, you miss the man. You aim for a button on the man's shirt and miss the button, you hit the man.

Don’t aim at the soldiers. Aim at the button on their coat or something small. Or it could even mean, don’t aim at the group of soldiers, pick one to aim at.

Pretty good advice really.

From American Sniper

“If you aim for a shirt button you might miss by 2 inches. You aim for a shirt you might miss by 2 feet.”

If a sniper aims for the eyesocket and misses by an inch, it's still a head shot and likely a kill.
